6.0 Make / Buy Direct: Part Costing

You are correct that average cost will not calculate if you don't put parts in stock. Average Cost is the average of all the parts in inventory updated on each inventory transaction. If you don't put parts in inventory, there will be no updated average cost. The parts will continue to transact at the last average cost in the system. You would have to update the costs manually, and at that point, you are effectively on Standard costing.

What's driving the change to make/purchase direct?

We are a machine builder. Currently we make and buy all parts to stock, then issue all parts to assembly jobs as materials. In part tracker, the cost page shows us the average and last costing for each part which is populated when the part goes in and out of stock.

We are considering changing to make and purchase direct, all parts being made and bought straight to the job. Do we lose part costing records if we do that? If so, does anyone have any advice for how else we can capture part cost history?

Thanks.
