6.0 Schema Change

We did two things. We upped the memory from 512 to 1 gig and ran the schema
change in single user mode. The total time for the schema change dropped
from eight hours to 34 minutes.

Just a note, the -B below is suitable for a system with 1 gig of memory. If
you have less, you need to adjust it accordingly.

Thanks all!

Hi all.

We have tried running a 5.2->6.0 conversion on two different servers
here. We have found that the schema change takes an awfully long time.
Much long than previous versions. To the point where we gave up after
14 hours.

The two servers we have tested are a 1.2G with 256Mb and a 2x666M with
512Mb. The latter is our production server for 5.2 and it runs fine. I
am currently also testing the schema change using a PIII-800 as the
server. Our database is about 2.1Gb.

I should note we are running a manual conversion to 6.0. It doesn't
say in the instructions, but remembered from previous conversions and
I disabled crash protection.

So I was wondering what kind of experience others had in the 5.2->6.0
conversion. Did anyone actually time the steps?

Thanks
Brian
I used a P4 Desktop with 1GB of memory. Database size is 1.6 GB.
5.2 -> 6.0 Schema chance took 29 minutes.
Antivirus was disabled and thanks to tips from others on here, I was in
Single user mode.

It sounds like your running the schema change from a client.
Try running it on the server your hours will drop to minutes.
When I did our conversion in October the schema change portion took about 10
minutes on a 2.6gb database.

Last March our 800MB DB took about 4 hours on our Netfinity (Xeon) 550Mhz server with 1GB memory.

I was a little concerend during the process due to the time it was taking and posted a message. I got a response off-list and later posted about it. Here is what I posted back then.
=======================================================
My thanks to Michael Benedict off-list for suggesting looking at the log file modified date to see if progress was being made. It shows the same time as the last time stamp in the Change Schema screen. But while looking at this I noticed the Mfgsys.B1 file is growing and being written to almost constantly. The modified time just about always equals the current time. Anyone know for sure if this is a good indication that things are still running. It has been going for over three hours now. The B1 file has grown to 80Mb out of the 800mb for the D1. Anyone recall how big a percent of their D1 the B1 got to be?

At least now I can watch for a change in the log file modified time from my office rather than camp out in the server room to see if it is done yet.
======================================================
So either watch the log file time or better yet the B1 file. Mostly just to be assured it is still running. 2.1GB / .8GB X 4 hours would mean about 10.5 hours for yours...all things being equal, which they are not. I have a hunch that RAM memory is very useful in this process so the more the better.

Just my observations here.

Actually, I am running it on the server. Should have mentioned that I
guess. There is no anti-virus installed.

I guess it depends on your hardware.

I did phone Epicor about this and they suggested running in single
user mode would improve performance by about 10%. OF course, they also
said running in multi user mode with crash protection off would gain
about 10%, so I guess it should be the same either way.

One thing they did say is that it does take much longer than 5.1 to
5.2 would. We reviewed the PF files used for the schema change and
there is one command which reindexes a table in our database which I
was told is very large.

Thanks for the info so far. I would be intersted to hear more from
everyone. Been running the schema change for four hours so far and its
gone as far as phase 2 of 600-100.

More Ram, More Ram, More Ram.
With only 512mb in your biggest box - it has got to be disk thrashing like
crazy.
Also, you do not mention what type of disk subsystem and configuration ?
SCSI / speed , Raid etc.

Brian,

It has been mentioned previously in this thread, but I'll stress it
again...do the upgrades in single user mode. Specifically, modify
your VTG files from where it says this:

ConnectOptions=-N TCP -H vantage -S 6000 -ld MFGSYS

to this:

ConnectOptions=-1 -i -B 90000

(big thanks to Jeremy Leonard for posting a message about this a few
weeks back)

My upgrade from 5.0 to 6.1 was taking *days* running on the server
with crash protection turned off. This little tweak allows me to
perform the entire upgrade in a day.

Good luck,
Adam

A few weeks ago Vantage Tech support had me modify the VTG file as Adam
mentioned. They also warned me that the -i in the command line disables
integrity checking during the conversions which could potentially be
harmful. My database was small enough, and machine fast enough were I was
willing to wait the few additional minutes integrity checking adds This was
on a 5.1 to 5.2 conversion, 6.0 may run longer.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
The -i parameter turns off integrity protection but you don't need it when
doing conversions because you already have the database backed up before you
start... right??? right!!!.

If the conversion aborts, you have to revert to the backup. If you don't use
the parameter, all writes to the database save the previous information...
slowing the whole process down. Since you have the backup, it's unnecessary.
The integrity is maintained if an abort occurs but there's no additional
integrity checking beyond that.
