6.1 Barcodes again

On the shop floor we are using the keyboard wedge style (PS2) scanners. On
my desk is a USB style scanner.
It may be an issue with the USB version, though I thought I got past this.
I could be wrong as it's been 3 years since I implemented this and the USB
one might have been the first we bought. That might have led to the others
being PS2. I really think somewhere in the back of my head there was a
solution to the USB scanners. I will spend some more time trying to find
it.
Meanwhile I really like the solution Fons offered and may change to that
method for use with 8x.

Aaron, what Metrologic model and interface (RS-232, etc) are you using.
After 3 weeks talking to Metrologic trying to get the scanner to accept
the
intercharacter delay, they finally tell me that the USB model doesn't
support intercharacter delays.

Thanks,

Norm,
I have looked through the manual and refreshed my memory. If your manual
is
the same (Configuration Guide) I used (my page 28) the "Variable msec
Intercharacter Delay" function combined with the numbers on Page 64 to
program my delay.
The good news is I remembered this much. The bad news is I don't remember
(and apparently did not record) the setting that I used. You can try
settings between their default max of 25 and the range max of 255 and you
should be able to find a setting that is reliable, but not so painfully
slow
that no one is willing to use it.
I think mine was somewhere around 100.
This should get you started. Let me know if you are having trouble.

Aaron, I've now got a Metrologic scanner to test. What configuration did
you use to slow down the transmission rate? I didn't see anything in the
manual to help.

Norm,
I have done this at 3 different Vantage installs. It always required
intentionally slowing down the scanner significantly. In the latest
example, I had to set the scanner (Metrologic) with an undocumented
setting
that I got from a call to support (like my 4th call). It was not about
putting in a delay at a spot in the scan, but slowing down the rate at
which
the scanner sends all text to the interface. Watching it now, you can
actually watch each character (type) into the screen. It takes maybe a
second and a half to enter the information, but still much faster and
much,
much more accurate than by hand.
Good luck,

Has anyone been successful with creating/reading barcodes that enters data
in 1st screen, opens up another screen, and then enters the data in the
2nd
screen and then closes the 2nd screen? Specifically - clocking an employee
in and closing the 2nd screen to complete the clock in.

The reader I'm using is a Symbol (Motorola) LS2208, and I just got off the
phone with Symbol Tech Support, and they couldn't help me.

Any ideas, or do I have to use 2 barcodes to complete the clock in.

I've done exactly that, but once the 2nd screen opens, it stops, like it

I am having the same difficulty with the same scanners. I get into the
screen and then it dumps all of the barcode data in the first field. I
am on 8.03 and would love to hear from anyone that can make this happen.
I want all of my MES entries to be done with as few bar codes as
possible. Ideally one scan to open the appropriate form and populate as
many fields as possible i.e. To start production Activity, scan one bar
code to open the form enter the Job Number, the Assembly, the Operation
then enter to leave the form. Anybody?

Thanks

Norm,
I have done this at 3 different Vantage installs. It always required
intentionally slowing down the scanner significantly. In the latest
example, I had to set the scanner (Metrologic) with an undocumented setting
that I got from a call to support (like my 4th call). It was not about
putting in a delay at a spot in the scan, but slowing down the rate at which
the scanner sends all text to the interface. Watching it now, you can
actually watch each character (type) into the screen. It takes maybe a
second and a half to enter the information, but still much faster and much,
much more accurate than by hand.
Good luck,
Aaron Hoyt

Subject: [Vantage]6.1 Barcodes again

Has anyone been successful with creating/reading barcodes that enters data
in 1st screen, opens up another screen, and then enters the data in the
2nd
screen and then closes the 2nd screen? Specifically - clocking an employee
in and closing the 2nd screen to complete the clock in.

The reader I'm using is a Symbol (Motorola) LS2208, and I just got off the
phone with Symbol Tech Support, and they couldn't help me.

Any ideas, or do I have to use 2 barcodes to complete the clock in.

I've been trying since it was discussed last week and still can't get
it to tab properly. It reads the job but doesn't tab through. I've
tried the $I and $M (I have enter=tab checked). How do you set a
pause? We have Ver 8.00.811b and Symbol model LS1902T.

Aaron, I've now got a Metrologic scanner to test. What configuration did
you use to slow down the transmission rate? I didn't see anything in the
manual to help.

Norm,
I did this using AutoHotKey keyboard macros available from
http://www.autohotkey.com/ , by using the advanced functions in
autohotkey (waiting for specific screens(window titles)) and entering
data on specific fields. (button classes)

Data entry is made with an exact timing and you don't have to slow down
the scanning proces.

i read the barcodedata into ONE field and then create a ahk macro
filling in all needed fields on my custom made data entry screen.
it took a lot time to make, but finally i got it working (it turns out
te be very reliable)

With kind regards

Norm,
I have looked through the manual and refreshed my memory. If your manual is
the same (Configuration Guide) I used (my page 28) the "Variable msec
Intercharacter Delay" function combined with the numbers on Page 64 to
program my delay.
The good news is I remembered this much. The bad news is I don't remember
(and apparently did not record) the setting that I used. You can try
settings between their default max of 25 and the range max of 255 and you
should be able to find a setting that is reliable, but not so painfully slow
that no one is willing to use it.
I think mine was somewhere around 100.
This should get you started. Let me know if you are having trouble.

Aaron, I've now got a Metrologic scanner to test. What configuration did
you use to slow down the transmission rate? I didn't see anything in the
manual to help.

thanks,

Norm,
I have done this at 3 different Vantage installs.

Aaron, what Metrologic model and interface (RS-232, etc) are you using.
After 3 weeks talking to Metrologic trying to get the scanner to accept the
intercharacter delay, they finally tell me that the USB model doesn't
support intercharacter delays.

Thanks,

Norm

Dear Tod,

When entering labor data i faced the same problem.

I couldn't get it working by just using customization.
in the example below i wrote a script for AHK from within Vantage, this
script is used in vantage 8.03, but the scripting principle is
applicable not only to vantage but on all applications

I let the employee enter a scan some codes to enter labor data

1)
"Company, RSC, resourcestring" this identifies the employee/resource
for entering the labordata

2)
a barcode with the text "DA-today" is a code for entering data on the
current date visual basic translates this into datestring = 12122007 (12
dec 2007)
or
a barcode with the text "DA-yesterday" is a code for entering data on
yesterday's date "11122007"=11 dec 2007
or any combination wanted for a date

3
The data from the job-traveler
in the form of "%Company%-WO-%Jobnumer%-%assemby%" this returns a string
containing the job number and the assembly on which labor is entered

In the example below I enter the data from bar code scan 1 and bar code
scan 2 into the main part of the labor entry screen ( I didn't include
all key presses it only describes the principle)

Dim FILE_NAME AS string = "c:\temp\InvoerLabor.ahk"
Dim objWriter As New System.IO.StreamWriter(FILE_NAME)

'// wait for the window with name "Shop employee search"
objWriter.WriteLine("WinWait, Shop Employee Search, ")
objWriter.WriteLine("IfWinNotActive, Shop Employee Search, ,
WinActivate, Shop Employee Search,")
objWriter.WriteLine("WinWaitActive, Shop Employee Search,")
'// click on id field, by using a window spy (included in AHK, this
gives you an EXACT location for the right place to enter data )
objWriter.WriteLine("ControlGetPos , Xvar,
Yvar,,,WindowsForms10.window.8.App411")
objWriter.WriteLine("MouseClick, left, Xvar+2, Yvar+2")
objWriter.WriteLine("Sleep, 100")
'// sent down key
objWriter.WriteLine("Send, {DOWN}")
objWriter.WriteLine("Sleep, 100")
'// resource string contains the part of the scanned data which
describes the resource
objWriter.WriteLine("Send, "+ResourceString)
objWriter.WriteLine("Sleep, 100")
objWriter.WriteLine("Send, {TAB}")
objWriter.WriteLine("Sleep, 100")
'// date string contains the part of the scanned data which describes
the labor date
objWriter.WriteLine("Send, "+datestring)
objWriter.WriteLine("Send, {TAB}")
objWriter.Close()
'// this command executes AHK from within Vantage
shell("\\vista\advantage\autohotkey.exe c:\temp\InvoerLabor.ahk")

Keep in mind that upgrading Vantage breaks this AHK macro (but on the
other hand, updating Vantage breaks almost every custom-made
report.............)
It takes a while until you're script is "fool-proof" but it can be done.
The more effort you make in making such a script, the faster and more
reliable it becomes, unfortunately this is not always the case in
customizing Vantage with visual basic.

Dear Tod,

When entering labordata i faced the same problem.

I couldn't get it working by just using customization.
in the example below i wrote a script for AHK from within Vantage

The employee scans some codes to enter labordata:

1)
"Company, RSC, resourcestring" this identifies the employee/resource
for entering the labordata (company and RSC only for verification)

2)
a barcode with the text "DA-today" is a code for entering data on the
current date visual basic translates this into datestring = 12122007 (12
dec 2007)
or
a barcode with the text "DA-yesterday" is a code for entering data on
yesterday's date "11122007"=11 dec 2007
or any combination wanted for a date

3
The data from the job-traveler
in the form of "%Company%-WO-%Jobnumer%-%assemby%" this returns a string
containg the jobnumer. and the assembly on which labor is entered

The barcodes are scanned into "memory fields" and are not stored in the
database.

In the example below I enter the data from barcode scan 1 and barcode
scan 2 into the main part of the labor entry screen ( I didn't include
all keypresses it only describes the principle)

Dim FILE_NAME AS string = "c:\temp\InvoerLabor.ahk"
Dim objWriter As New System.IO.StreamWriter(FILE_NAME)

'// wait for the window with name "Shop employee search"
objWriter.WriteLine("WinWait, Shop Employee Search, ")
objWriter.WriteLine("IfWinNotActive, Shop Employee Search, ,
WinActivate, Shop Employee Search,")
objWriter.WriteLine("WinWaitActive, Shop Employee Search,")
'// click on id field, by using a window spy (included in AHK, this
gives you an EXACT location for the right place to enter data )
objWriter.WriteLine("ControlGetPos , Xvar,
Yvar,,,WindowsForms10.window.8.App411")
objWriter.WriteLine("MouseClick, left, Xvar+2, Yvar+2")
objWriter.WriteLine("Sleep, 100")
'// sent down key
objWriter.WriteLine("Send, {DOWN}")
objWriter.WriteLine("Sleep, 100")
'// resource string contains the part of the scanned data which
describes the resource
objWriter.WriteLine("Send, "+ResourceString)
objWriter.WriteLine("Sleep, 100")
objWriter.WriteLine("Send, {TAB}")
objWriter.WriteLine("Sleep, 100")
'// date string contains the part of the scanned data which describes
the labordate
objWriter.WriteLine("Send, "+datestring)
objWriter.WriteLine("Send, {TAB}")
objWriter.Close()
'// this command executes AHK from within Vantage
shell("\\vista\advantage\autohotkey.exe c:\temp\InvoerLabor.ahk")

Keep in mind that upgrading Vantage breaks this AHK macro (but on the
other hand, updating Vantage breaks almost every custom-made
report.............)
It takes a while until you're script is "fool-profe" but it can be done.
The more effort you make in making such a script, the faster and more
reliable it becomes, unfortunatly this is not allways the case in
customizing Vantage with visual basic.
