[6.1] Data Matrix ECC200 2D Bar Coding

Hi Todd,

We were in a similar situation to you.

We are printing 2D barcodes (PDF417) on some Citizen CLP-2001 using BarTender.

The printers are about 8 years old and they haven't had head changes despite printing 1,000,000s of labels.

They have never broken down and have never been services. That is if you are printing labels.

If you are printing on a laser, we find any work.

So far we have printed approximately 200,000 2D barcodes and do spot checks at the beginning and end of a print run.

We have never had any of them fail. Before going live with the 2D system I tested almost 10,000 barcodes all of which scanned perfectly.

I personally wouldnt waste your money on a validation scanner.

I would simply buy a semi-decent 2D scanner (we are using HandHeld Products 4600g) which are lightening fast and also much more accurate for scanning linear barcodes as well!

To check the information on the barcode we simply scan the barcode into word or similar and check it against the text version (printed in small below the barcode).

Its a little basic, but with a 0% failure rate (from my experience) it isn't worth spending 1000s on something that isn't necessary and that will slow the job down.

Cheers,

CHRIS

We are being required by a customer (with sufficient clout) to put 2D "bar" codes on parts we ship to them. And I thought Code 128 was bad.

Is anyone printing 2D codes and if so what are you using for validation scanners? My understanding is that the scanners for 2D are more like CCD cameras than the typical linear light beam for stripe codes. Also these will be fairly small...1/2 inch X 1/2 inch...so printer suggestions would also be helpful.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
