905 Test server

We constantly create Pilot and test servers and using VM is the best way!
Short of a smart configuration change (apps server and ODBC) there is no other work and time to clone and change configuration is about 30 min
At the other side I have a server with same configuration (guarantied) and same performance â€" not sure why anyone would do otherwise if they had the technology
And if you don’t why don’t you get it as you will need it in the future

Hi All,
I am setting up a test server for 905 and would like to know what others
have used.
Thanks in advance for your replies,
Nelson

For our test server we are just using a Desktop PC. It doesn't run real fast but it is still functional for a single user to get in and test fixes or patches and a lot cheaper than using a server.

I'd suggest creating a VM. You can host it on whatever you have lying
around. We just bounce our testing VMs to whatever server has the least
load.
Using a VM makes testing about 1000x times easier. You can set snapshots and
do roll backs if things get messed up and you'll have a standard starting
point for all tests. Plus, they're trivial to copy if you find that you need
multiple test boxes.

While I can mostly agree with this, one thing you want to make sure of when
you build a test server is to match your environment as much as possible,
and this includes making sure all drive letters and file paths are the same
on both machines, this will save you a TON of headaches when it comes to
moving the database from one machine to the other machine, then all custom
reports, and any file references aren't going to be messed up and need to be
fixed.

In reality though, I find that it's best to buy an inexpensive server to do
this on, although a VM would work great. Disk Speed and multiple processors
are huge, even if it's just to make the admins life easier doing the upgrade
conversions and schema changes.

I'm just getting ready to load a VM with 32-bit version of OE as my
"Admin Workstation" to run conversion programs. I'm hoping that the
network connection of a VM will be quicker than going through another
workstation on the same switch...

Any thoughts?

Mark W.
I have that, and running a conversion program that way is 3-4 times
faster than running from the PC on my desk. Look at VMware's "VMXNet 3"
virtual network adapter, high performance between VMs on the same
physical hardware.
