Allowing MES/Shop floor production employees to see CAD drawings

That's good to know. Thanks for the information, I'll have to check that out!

I would like to enable the capability of allowing a shop floor employee to view the CAD drawing on the part for the job/operation that is being worked on.

Has anyone done this?
Did it require modifying the MES menu w/ a new application/solution?
Are you attaching the CAD drawing to the part as a link?

Any details and eleborations would be greatly appreciated.
I wrote a web app that allows user to enter Job# and the select operation from ddl and it displays info from vantage. I also included a search box that will query our sharepoint document library and they can pull up the drawing from there.

Probably not exactly what you are looking for, but it beats having vantage/mes running on dozens of workstations

Well, that's a possibility.

My goal is to make it easy for the shop floor operator to see the drawing for the job/release/part/rev that they are working on for the process.

First thought was do to this in MES since that is where they login to the job/part/operation. Then give them the ability to click on something to see the CAD PDF link.

Based on this, does your approach sound similar?

As long as you had a working link stored in a comment or UD field, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

We use a handful of MES stations to act as time clocks and for other lookups / prints.

The primary workstations look up Operation data and drawings through browser windows - another web app allows start and end activity transactions to be recorded without MES session running.

For quick little transactions, lookups, webservices work just dandy.

We are part of the way there, but the final steps in our process are
manual & paper. We attach the drawings as PDF files to the part
revision when parts are created, and these get automatically attached to
the job when it is created. There is a simple naming convention for
multiple attachments ("assembly", "packaging", etc). These attachments
are viewable/printable via job entry (often printed the same time as the
traveler) and via job tracker (which is accessible from the standard
MES). But its several clicks to view/print, and we've never tried to
make it automatic - if you do that, I'd be interested in your solution.

Jim,

You should be able to just add a button to a form, and call the appropriate program (pdf viewer, cad viewer, etc.). You’ll have to add some logic before it to read the job information to get the link where these are stored, but all of this is fairly standard customization. I’ve created customizations that open up a PDF for users at the click of a button within the Start Production Activity.

Contact me offline if you need a nudge in the right direction.

Hi Jim, You can use Vantage's Document Management Module. You create an attachment to the Part (Epicor calls it an attachment but it is really a shortcut to the document on your server)which can be any document you want to associate with the part: drawings, tech sheets, customer specifications, etc. In MES, the machinists can launch part tracker and view and print all attachments that exist for the part. Then you would just need to make sure the workstation running MES have the correct software for viewing all the different file types.

You would also need to put a process in place to ensure that the machinists pick the right attachments for the revision on which they are working becuase the attachements do not link to a specific part revision, they link to the part.

One correction: attachments can be linked to a part revision (while its
un-approved), as well as to a part. When you create a job and choose a
revision, the attachments from that revision are linked to the job... so
printing from job tracker will always give you the correct revision.
