AMD servers Blank Title 81890

We are runnig Vantage 8.03.408a on a Dell PowerEdge 6950 with 4 Dual-Core AMD Opteron Processors (8218 2.59GHz) and 16 GB RAM. No issues. Very stable and no problems with server performance.

Â
We are upgrading from v6.1 to v9 and we need a new server.

Does anybody run Vantage on an AMD server? Are there any issues with using an AMD processor instead of an Intel processor?

Is the amount of memory more important than the processor speed?

Thanks,

AMD vs. Intel I would think is irrelevant. I'm assuming you're talking about 64-bit AMD vs. Intel.

I have 64-bit boxes with AMD and Intel. Both are fast and compatibility issues are with the x64 platform itself vs. a particular processor architecture.

Memory is good, particular for MSSQL (can't speak to Progress), and its cheap. Gets lots of memory. :-)

Again if you're on MSSQL it will take advantage of multiple cores, so multicore for SQL environments is more important than raw processor speed. I'd rather have 4 2.0GHz cores than 2 4.0GHz cores. They run cooler too. AMD procs tend to run cooler and with less power than Intel, but it depends on the chipset, etc.

Disk I/O is probably the biggest driver for Vantage performance from what I understand. Get as many fast spindles as you can on a good-quality storage controller, and use striping to get even more I/O performance, and mirroring to protect your data. There's some discussions in the list archives about how many disks, etc. that folks recommend. But 15K SAS HDDs have worked well for me.

My 2 cents... Vantage is a critical service. It keeps people working,
production flowing, invoice printing, you employed, etc etc... :-)

Don't cut corners with hardware which supports critical services. Plus
it could potentially tarnish your name at your company and have everyone
loathe Vantage. Buy more than you think you'll ever need. You don't
want to be back in this scenario in 2 years. It's not a fun weekend
project swapping servers. :-)

I had a customer with Vantage 8.0 Progress on an AMD box and had nothing
but intermittent issues with it.

I'd stay away from AMD. Stick with IBM, Dell or HP servers. Go 64-bit
and get 16GB of RAM. Get as many Intel processors as you can: Dual
quads min. And as Brian mentioned, FAST I/O. Get high RPM drives. If
you're going SQL have a separate spindle for transaction logs raid 1+0
of at least 4 disks and a separate spindle for db, raid 1+0, up to 8 or
more drives. Keep your OS and Vantage folders on different partitions.

AMD is good for a web server but not a database server, IMHO.

Don't skimp. Your life will be easier.
