ArcServe error message

As promised....it appears to have been the cable. It was replaced with a
nice, new one and the tape drive seems to be working again. It was a
beautiful sight to see a completed, successful backup! :) Thanks again for
everyone's input. Now hopefully to finish the firewall issue today! :)

Thanks, Shirley. I called HP since we have a maintenance agreement with
them. After an hour on the phone, it looks like it has something to do with
the drive. Device Manager isn't even showing the tape drive, so they are
thinking a loose cable or such. Technician is supposed to be here this
afternoon. I'll let y'all know what they say. Thanks again!! :)

I'm assuming that from the error that its a scsi. Arcserve/HP tape drive
combination is usually a pretty rock solid combination. Without going into
too much research, my gut feeling is that you might need to reinstall the
drivers for your Scsi card. It's not uncommon to forget that component of
this trio. Go into the control pannel and look at the hardware manager to
see if you have any exclamation marks next to any of the devices. If so re
install the drivers, be cautioned though it will probably require you to
reboot your server. Since you are going to have to reboot the server one
way or another, do this first. Clear your users, shut down Vantage and any
other server resident program, REboot (BEFORE Driver reinstallation). Then
watch the startup screens very closely. There should be a startup screen
that will tell you wheather or not the drive initialized. If it DOES NOT
initialize, reinstall the scsi card driver then reboot again. If it DOES
initialize start Arcserve and try a backup.

Don't know why the tape drive wouldn't be initialized. We installed
Norton
Corporate and I went through a bunch of stuff with ArcServe to make sure
that the backup was working. After checking for a few days and seeing
that
it was working ok, I just switched tapes in the morning. Something told
me
to look at it this morning and I was shocked (to say the least!) to see
that
it hasn't backed up all month!!!! YIPES! No idea what has happened...not
even sure where to look. :( As far as backup devices, it is an HP drive
and I'm running ArcServe for backup. Does that help??? TIA!

Tricia,

Don't know if this is the same problem or not. But I had the same situation
where my Backupexec wouldn't give me a consistantly successful backup for 2
months. I'd come in in the morning and get error beeps all over the place
when I opened the backupexec console - a whole host of different error
messages. After dealing with pure speculation from 6 separate tech support
people between software and hardware, I got a Dell hardware support tech on
the phone who had me download and install the latest firmware upgrade for
the tape drive (the brains of the tape drive). Not a peep since. Works
great. I don't think I would attempt it without a consultant who knows for
sure what to do, though. Just a thought, if nothing else works.

drivers for your Scsi card.

Thanks for replying, Shirley!

TIA!

Tricia

That error sounds like its coming from a backup tape drive that has not
initialized. What kind of backup devices are on that machine.

Me again. :)

Doesn't look like anyone had any ideas about my firewall problem.
Hoping
someone can help me with this issue.

I'm getting an error message....not sure what it means.

TAPE E6300 Windows NT SCSI Port Error [ABSL:4030 CMD:Oh] SCSI Command
Retry

Any thoughts??? Remember, we have no IT person here, so please keep it
in
layman's terms!! :)

Thanks!!
