Good afternoon.
I'm a new member to this group.
I'm a manufacturing engineer, and we use Vantage 8.03.409C
Vantage was set up long before I became part of the company, but I am now engineering parts, and I've found areas that maybe could be better handled.
One such area is the way we structure Assemblies.
We have always created assemblies by structuring the components as "materials".
This created problems for quoting because I could not engineer the components or change details on them, so we had to do assembly quotes by engineering each individual component and using outside software to figure out the final assembly pricing.
I recently was shown how to quote assemblies by structuring the components as "sub-assemblies" which allows me to engineer each component.
This was a HUGE help to me!
I am wondering if we should be structuring the assemblies this way in our system for actual parts (not just quotes) and what the differences are for scheduling and issuing components as sub-assemblies vs materials.
It initially looks to me like this is a better way to go, and could possibly improve other areas of scheduling and production for assemblies, but I would like to better understand what all would be affected by changing components from materials to sub-assemblies.
Thank you.
