Automatic linking of tables

Hey everybody... thanks that is exactly the help I needed this morning. Bye
the way, I don't lick my computer but I do occasionally kiss it.

Like I said, its been a Monday, I have cold and I'm doing shots of Nighttime
Nyquil.
I've sent 20 e-mails this morning and every one of them has had some kind of
mistake.

Hey Jeremy, if you look at #9 you just told Lois to lick her computer.
You
might want to dust it off a little before you do step #9, Lois. Must be
Monday!

We use Access 2000 as well.

Steps:

1)Delete current linked table.
2)From the file menu select Get External Data.
3)From that menu select Link Tables.
4)The Link table dialog box opens, change the "Files of Type" box to "ODBC
Databases()
5)The Select Data Source Dialog Box opens, choose the "Machine Datasource"
tab.
6)Select the ODBC DSN that you have setup for Vantage. Ours for example
is
"ProgressODBC"
7)The "Logon to Progress SQL-92 Driver" dialog opens.
8)Enter your password and then select OK.
9)The Linked Tables Dialog box will then open. In the lower right hand
corner you should see the "Save Password" checkbox. Put a check in it by
licking on it.
10)Select the tables you want to link and then click on "OK"

You should not you a File or User DSN when setting up ODBC.

Relink all the tables. On the screen where you select the tables to link,
there is a small box in the lower right hand corner that says, "Save
Password". You need to select this.
That should fix your problems.

I will not get the report and the call to ODBC will fail. How should this

Has anyone ever developed a routine or macro that allows automatic
linking of tables to the ODBC data source so as to not have to go
through the routine each and ever time? We used access to modify our
Packing list and are using ODBC to link to the files. For each user
who needs to print this pack list we would like this process
automated. Any ideas?

Lois,
I am Access and Excel ignorant, so I'm just shooting in the dark here. In Excel, you can use a macro (keystroke) thing. Our resident Excel guru has his Excel ODBC reports set to automatically click on the OK button for ODBC login (we're using he aftermarket Merant 3.5 drivers, but should work for other ones too). Perhaps there is a way to Automate the Access database using a macro to do the ODBC connection.

If not, feel free to call.

You could create a macro to run automatically and refresh Vantage data at
entry. I do this all the time. Here it is the info for Access 2000-2002:

Delete Object - Select table and the linked table from Vantage to refresh.
Note that you are deleting the link, not the table!!!
Transfer Database - Within transfer database, there are the following
options:
First Option (Link or Import - note if you want to make changes on Vantage
tables carefully, choose link and modify your ODBC driver from read only to
full access). Second Option - Database Type - Choose ODBC database.
Third Option - Database Name - type the following exactly as it appears
changing only your parameters.
ODBC;DSN=epic51;HOST=[Enter Server Name or IP
address];PORT=3550;DB=vantage;DATABASE=
Fourth Option - Object type (usually table)
Source - PUB.Customer (noticed that all vantage tables start with a PUB. and
the name)
Destination - Since you deleted the object before, you will need to recreate
it now. This case should be VantageCustomer or anything you might want to
call the table. Make sure you are deleting the same object at the beginning
so you can refresh data properly.
Structure Only (yes/no) Importing structures help you understand Vantage
table keys and other factors to build reports, etc. Vantage keys appear only
on links, not imports. I always answer No because I want data and structure
together.

This macro can be run at start up or opening a form and you will refresh
data automatically. My experience is to work always with imports so you do
not hang the server down running queries that read Vantage tables directly.
Hope this helps making your connection easier.

We use Access 2000 as well.

Steps:

1)Delete current linked table.
2)From the file menu select Get External Data.
3)From that menu select Link Tables.
4)The Link table dialog box opens, change the "Files of Type" box to "ODBC
Databases()

If you are going to import the data then I would suggest a much faster
method would be to export the vantage table to a text file using Progress
code and then link the text file as a table into access.

This is what my luanch program looks like. I fire it from a Vantage menu
item. I find that it's allot faster then ODBC. I also use it when I run
into a comment field that is two long to work with ODBC.

DEFINE VARIABLE ProgName AS CHARACTER NO-UNDO.
DEFINE VARIABLE ProgOption AS CHARACTER NO-UNDO.
DEFINE VARIABLE hInstanceNum AS INTEGER NO-UNDO.

/* This section exports the DMRCorAct table to a dos txt file. */
OUTPUT TO c:\vntgwork\DMRCorAc.txt BINARY NO-CONVERT.
FOR EACH DMRCorAct:
EXPORT DELIMITER "~011" DMRCorAct.
END.
OUTPUT CLOSE.

/* This section launches the Access database. */
ASSIGN ProgName = 'msaccess.exe'
ProgOption = 'v:\vantage\ud\dmrlkup\access\dmrlkup.mde'.

RUN v:\vantage\lib\ShellExec.r (INPUT ProgName,
INPUT ProgOption,
OUTPUT hInstanceNum).

Databases()
5)The Select Data Source Dialog Box opens, choose the "Machine Datasource"
tab.
6)Select the ODBC DSN that you have setup for Vantage. Ours for example is
"ProgressODBC"
7)The "Logon to Progress SQL-92 Driver" dialog opens.
8)Enter your password and then select OK.
9)The Linked Tables Dialog box will then open. In the lower right hand
corner you should see the "Save Password" checkbox. Put a check in it by
licking on it.
10)Select the tables you want to link and then click on "OK"

Relink all the tables. On the screen where you select the tables to link,
there is a small box in the lower right hand corner that says, "Save
Password". You need to select this.
That should fix your problems.

We use Access 2000 as well.

Steps:

1)Delete current linked table.
2)From the file menu select Get External Data.
3)From that menu select Link Tables.
4)The Link table dialog box opens, change the "Files of Type" box to "ODBC
Databases()
