Bar Code Beginner

I've looked at here bar coding several times this is what I've found.
Version 5.0

1. Think H U G E project - to be effective you'll need to put a label
on every significant piece of material you have.
2. To be effective in receiving you'll have to get your vendors on
board.
3. Each significant step will probably need the application of a
different label if you intend to track through your shop
4. 95% of your people don't understand what a bar code even is
(including management) and why certain things are important for the system
to work right.

Go through this exercise:
1. Walk through your process from Receiving to Shipping at each step
ask, Who creates the label, How is the label created, What's on the label,
who applies the label, Who reads the label, How do you read the label, what
happens if there is no label, how is it replaced. Then think about slow
moving stock already on the shelf.

After you go through that exercise you'll see what kind of balloon you're
trying to swallow.
Here's what I found.
Significant investment in hardware, (scanners, printers)
Significant changes in procedures, (you have to accommodate the needs of the
system precisely)
Significant training requirements, (people have understand WHY it's
important. Floor people are your least problem, Management is the drag)
Significant difficulty getting Vendors to cooperate. Especially small ones.

You'll go through this exercise, management will look at the implementation
plan, ask you if your crazy, tell you Home depot does it all the time and
why is it so complicated, expensive and time consuming, then drop the whole
idea. Then 6 months later they'll ask you to do it again.

There is no easy process for this. If you've got many many parts with many
many componets there can be a pay off. If you have a relatively simple
process with relatively few components the expense and effort won't pay off
very well, its simpler to just key the stuff in. It'll just "cool" that you
use bar codes.

I have seen some recent threads about barcoding. The company I work for
is not currently using any bar coding but has interest in doing so. I
have recently been put in charge of shipping and have oodles of
inventory control issues; many stemming from manual transaction entries.
We are to move into a new facility in about 6 months and I am trying to
get some information as to what bar coding can do for us, what types of
readers to purchase, any limitations in implementing and just any
general suggestions from someone with this experience to this rookie.
The only thing I know for sure is that I would like to use hand-held
scanners in shipping and fixed scanners for all production data
collection terminals. Vantage help offers little to nothing in the way
of assistance. I should also mention that we have no formal IT dept.
and only contract these services sparingly. If anyone out there can
share some information (including a name and phone number for perhaps a
follow up phone
call) it would be greatly appreciated.

OK. I'll toss my couple cents in. I think perhaps some hesitancy in the group to respond may be due to a lack of understanding of the objectives in mind. Whether barcoding is for:
A) Customer labeling requirements on shipments
B) Internal data collection issues (speed, accuracy)
C) Ineractive with Vantage or batch data collection
D) Labor Data Collection (scan job travelers, etc... - see 'B')
E) Scan raw material issued to job
F) lots more applications.......

It can be as simple or complicated as you like. If complicated it will be tough to do without IT or technical staff. If with technical support we have tended to keep things as simple as possible.

Simple (products listed are what we use):
Keyboard wedge type scan guns (like Welch-Allyn ImageTeam 3800) on PC keyboard lines. Anything scanned shows as keystrokes on the PC.
Laser printers printing bar coded data using selection of Dataworks 39 font (comes with Vantage)
...and/or label printers (like Zebra Z4M) that prints just like a laser printer (on special label or tag stock) - no special programming required.

Complex:
Wireless scanners transmiting to Vantage PC and/or connected to tablet PC with wireless network connection . Or haldheld scanners storing scans and touchpad entered quantities for later download to a spreadsheet that then assisted entery to Vantage via macro routines (like Ground Control).

Here is a simple test project to help prove worth of the scanning side if you ship very much by UPS or FedEx:
Buy one keyboard wedge gun type scanner and scan the tracking codes into the Pack Slip field for this. No manual entry needed and always accurate. Now in the Customer Shipment tracking screen (with a little setup) clicking on the shipment tracker will bring up the UPS (or FedEx) web site and track the shipment. Very handy for Customer Service people when customer calls. All because of a 2 second zap with a scanner in shipping to get that info into Vantage. No programming, no particular skills required - just plug it in and scan.

But first determine what the problem is that bar coding (and scanning) might be a solution for.

-Todd C.
