Bar stock inventory, tracability

Hi we are a high mix, low volume manufacturer for cntrolled parts such as aerospace, medical,… We want to manage inventory precisely with a high level of tracability.

Here are the informations we wnat to manage about a particular bar stock:
Heat number
Lot number
Supplier
manufacturer
Number of bars per lot
Bar length

the reason why we want to manage bars individually is that is is a lot easier for operators to be aware of the inventory.

We have the advanced UOM module. I tried using a dynamic attribute class of type quantity and UOM. this seems to works properly but when trying to add a part to a manufacturing method, the method ask for a attribute set… I do not want to link my demand to a specific attribute set.

The other possibility would be to use serial numberering. The problem here is that i cannot use decimal units in my part…

We could also make a customisation to be able to receive multiple lot on a single receipt line but we want to be as vanilla as possible cause of all the implications of customisations…

I am kinda lost… we must not be the first machine shop to try to manage bar stock and remnents…

Hi Alexandre,

There are probably a million ways to handle bar stock. We handle it with a UOM if inches. It makes the purchasing a little trickier as some suppliers sell by the bound, others by the bar. But it makes the BOM much easier as Engineering knows I need 2.5" of Ø1" stock per part, this can then be issued accordingly with the remainder of the bar staying in inventory.

we are working on a solution of one of our customers, basically when a lot of material comes in, under one lot, the lengths, diameters and specification can be entered for each bar which in itself will be one lot.

Then on all screens that display pats by lot, they will be grouped by lot number.

for example 10 bars are received under lot 12345, this creates lots 12345/1, 12345/2, 12345/3 etc.

this is how I have used it at a previous company, as this allows each individual bar to hold its own characteristics, for example bar 2 has been sent out for a further heat treatment and know has a different specification

ideally i would not be a customisation…we want vanilla epicor as much as possible…
