Barcodes with embedded tabs, epicor, intermec and excel (or bart

I recommend the MicroPDF417 (maintains size better than the normal one) and we have access to it for us through BarTender. If you do not have BarTender you will need to purchase it for your barcoding software or through IDAutomation if you want to use it for Crystal. There are free ways to do it through a PHP website and dynamic image sources in Crystal but you have to be savvy in all those areas to know how to get it to work right (when setup right it works perfect, set it and forget it)

Do you have a recommended source for the PDF417 barcode font?

My last time saying it if you want reliability you need to code a custom field and parse it in c# then it doesn’t matter which scanner (say you replace them 3 years from now or buy more different type brand), what barcode symbology, what time of day or if the stars are aligned it will just work.

"I would also recommend PDF417 barcodes as they are much more robust/faster to scan/accurate. You need a 2D scanner to read them which most are these days."

So, the handhelds are 2D scanners, however we have barcode readers attached to work stations that are only 1D so we will need to stick with 1D on this case. I did try the 2D barcode just to see if it would make a difference, and it does the same thing (same info in both fields)

"The other is to switch to a different barcode "Font" that supports the extended ASCII codes."

With bartender, I am using Code 128 which is full ASCII. It codes in the tab, and the cursor moves like it should so it seems like the scanner is reading full ASCII

"That sound like a fault at your end with either Bartender or your scanner."

yup. That's why I'm here......

"Download a barcode scanner app to your phone and see what that does."

Since the phone doesn't have tab function, it puts in a space. Is there anything I should do with that information?

"You may need to turn Full Ascii on on the device."

It's on as far as I can tell. It will read a tab and move, so I'm thinking it has to be on. I just don't know why it's putting in the info from the first part of the barcode in the second field. Like Josh says, maybe it's a timing thing that I can't change.

With the 1D scanners (which up until this point I have pretty much forgot about) I tried using the HH program from epicor on the thin client workstations and there, it will not tab at all. I opened up a text document and scanned as a keyboard wedge and the tab is communicated when writing to a simple text file, but a tab in E-10 encoded into the barcode doesn't seem to work. I tried messing with that 123scan2 program and found a few things link enable keyboard wedge and keystroke delay to 20ms but it didn't change anything with E-10. I'll probably have to do some more work to try to understand how that 123scan2 works.

Looks like I'm stuck using 1 barcode/field unless anyone knows of some obscure setting to change somewhere.

Thanks for your help guys.

Hi

Bartender might be outputting Full Ascii but is your scanner set up to read full ascii?

PDF417 is font like 3of9 or 128. It is a complex formula that generate the barcode.

What happens if you scan the barcode into excel? Does it scan correctly or does it scan the warehouse twice?

There must be a simple fix somewhere - we have been using the duel field barcodes with Epicor since 2009.

Thanks
