Barcodes with embedded tabs, epicor, intermec and excel (or bart

Hi

Writing something with C# might be a solution - If you know how.

But if you dont know how having the tab in the barcode is a much simpler solution.

Also no upgrade will alter it.

I recommend the MicroPDF417 (maintains size better than the normal one) and we have access to it for us through BarTender. If you do not have BarTender you will need to purchase it for your barcoding software or through IDAutomation if you want to use it for Crystal. There are free ways to do it through a PHP website and dynamic image sources in Crystal but you have to be savvy in all those areas to know how to get it to work right (when setup right it works perfect, set it and forget it)

Do you have a recommended source for the PDF417 barcode font?

My last time saying it if you want reliability you need to code a custom field and parse it in c# then it doesn’t matter which scanner (say you replace them 3 years from now or buy more different type brand), what barcode symbology, what time of day or if the stars are aligned it will just work.

"I would also recommend PDF417 barcodes as they are much more robust/faster to scan/accurate. You need a 2D scanner to read them which most are these days."

So, the handhelds are 2D scanners, however we have barcode readers attached to work stations that are only 1D so we will need to stick with 1D on this case. I did try the 2D barcode just to see if it would make a difference, and it does the same thing (same info in both fields)

"The other is to switch to a different barcode "Font" that supports the extended ASCII codes."

With bartender, I am using Code 128 which is full ASCII. It codes in the tab, and the cursor moves like it should so it seems like the scanner is reading full ASCII

"That sound like a fault at your end with either Bartender or your scanner."

yup. That's why I'm here......

"Download a barcode scanner app to your phone and see what that does."

Since the phone doesn't have tab function, it puts in a space. Is there anything I should do with that information?

"You may need to turn Full Ascii on on the device."

It's on as far as I can tell. It will read a tab and move, so I'm thinking it has to be on. I just don't know why it's putting in the info from the first part of the barcode in the second field. Like Josh says, maybe it's a timing thing that I can't change.

With the 1D scanners (which up until this point I have pretty much forgot about) I tried using the HH program from epicor on the thin client workstations and there, it will not tab at all. I opened up a text document and scanned as a keyboard wedge and the tab is communicated when writing to a simple text file, but a tab in E-10 encoded into the barcode doesn't seem to work. I tried messing with that 123scan2 program and found a few things link enable keyboard wedge and keystroke delay to 20ms but it didn't change anything with E-10. I'll probably have to do some more work to try to understand how that 123scan2 works.

Looks like I'm stuck using 1 barcode/field unless anyone knows of some obscure setting to change somewhere.

Thanks for your help guys.

Hi,

I'm trying to make location bar codes to help speed up the data entry process on the shop floor. Since the locations in E-10 have a warehouse listed, the warehouse code has to be typed into the warehouse tab. I would like to not have to do this by embedding a tab into the barcode, so that you scan one barcode and it fills in both fields. I'm trying to do it in excel and can't get anything to work. Using bartender, I have gotten a barcode to get it to tab over to the BIN field after putting in GEN in the Whse field, but then it puts in GEN again in the BIN field for some reason. Anyone have any tips on how to get this to work?

Background. I'm using free 3Of9 font in excel. I've got bartender set to code 128. In bartender I could pick different symbology if that would help. In excel I only have the one barcode font.  I have an intermec CK3X scanner running remote desktop to the HH application with E-10.

Google scan suffix for your model scanner. You actually have to set the scanner to tab after scan. That’s the most reliable way to go about that.

I'm not looking for a tab after each scan. I want to do both fields in one scan. 1 scan to fill in 2 fields. With the labels being small, I don't want to throw in the frustration of making sure that the right barcode gets scanned in the right order.
Found this.

You would have to include a tab in the scan (won’t work reliably if a BO method is called on leave of first field) or create a single field to scan the value into as say (value1~value2) split those up and fill the “real” fields and/or run any BO methods associated. Example if you did Jobnum~Assemb~oper all in one you would have to fill each field in code and run the appropriate BO Methods for each along the way.

Yeah, I've seen that too. I've been trying to get that to work but it doesn't seem to be. The scanner just reads the special characters as regular characters in the barcode, it doesn't read them as the ascii codes that I'm trying to introduce.
Warehouse«HT»Bin

Put that into your bartender label.

The problem with putting it directly in the barcode is timing. If the program hangs for a second switching fields, it won’t work reliably.

Were you able to get your other BarTender stuff sorted out you asked about last week?

Warehouse«HT»Bin

Put that into your bartender label.

The «HT» almost works, in that it tabs over and puts something in both fields. However for some reason it puts the same thing (the characters before «HT») in both fields.

Ex. 11«HT» 23 goes Field 1:11 Field 2:11.  I'm looking for Field 1:11 Field 2:23.

Frustrating.
Josh,

We have a meeting set up for Thursday with the expert from out consultant group. Hopefully that will go well and we will get that stuff set up. As of right now though, we are stuck waiting.

Brandon

Bummer. It’s pretty simple so hopefully they can get you square away with that. Sorry to say too that your best bet on this multiple values one code is customizing. I know no one likes to hear that.

It's been a few years (2010) when I resolved this issue with a customer of mine.
We utilized 123Scan2 to program the barcode scanners from Motorola.
This software actually allowed embedding commands into the barcodes to not only enter tabs, but also control characters.

I never tested it with the handhelds to see if they would read these codes.

The other is to switch to a different barcode "Font" that supports the extended ASCII codes.

Hi

I would recommend sticking to bartender rather than excel.

You would need

Warehouse<HT>Bin<HT>

I would also always recommend hard coding tabs etc into the barcodes rather than relying on your scanner as it gives you more flexibility for the future.

For example you may set a tab suffix in your scanner and in the future a piece of software requires a carriage return instead of a tab, it wont work with the same scanner.

I would also recommend PDF417 barcodes as they are much more robust/faster to scan/accurate. You need a 2D scanner to read them which most are these days.

You may need to turn Full Ascii on on the device.

Referring to this ...

That sound like a fault at your end with either Bartender or your scanner.

Download a barcode scanner app to your phone and see what that does.

I would avoid 3of9

I’ve played with this to varying degrees of success and failure, the environment variables are a lot to deal with. If you want a bullet proof solution that will live the test of time and the variables of equipment, environment etc, I think following Josh’s suggestion of controlling all of that within code might be your best approach.

My last time saying it if you want reliability you need to code a custom field and parse it in c# then it doesn’t matter which scanner (say you replace them 3 years from now or buy more different type brand), what barcode symbology, what time of day or if the stars are aligned it will just work.

Do you have a recommended source for the PDF417 barcode font?

Thanks for your help guys.

I've done this several times depending on the screen there may be an on field changed event (most fields in Epicor do it) if that's the case no amount of encoding in the barcode is going to help. Also there are several applications in which Epicor automatically sets the Focus on a certain field after an event trigger so no matter what your barcode / scanner does Epicor will set the focus where it wants. Your best bet is a custom field where you "scan to" and then you provide your own on change event that parses the field and puts the information on the right place. For example your barcode may read
WAREHOUSE-BIN-QTY[TAB]

You put a validating event on that custom field and when it triggers you'd SPLIT that string on dashes to obtain the 3 values and then you set the dataview fields to the matching value.

I believe this was something like what Josh was suggesting and it is indeed the most reliable way to do this without knowing exactly what the form does natively.

Thanks!
