Basic Contact Maintenance

Has anyone had any success with maintaining contacts in P21?
We began requiring a contacts on all orders placed. The out of the box workflow forces for a customer to be selected before a contact. This limits the contacts to those related to the customer. What is happening is employees are adding a new contact that may already be within the system, simply assigned to another customer.
P21 allows for contacts to be members of multiple customers, however due to the order of operations in order entry, this functionality is essentially disabled.
To have an employee search for the contact, add them to the customer all before beginning the order is too time consuming, especially for our counter sales.
I am now cleaning up the duplicates.

I suppose my question is has anyone had any luck with contact de-duplication/merging and/or disabling unneeded contacts?
