Best way to track shop tooling / serialized measurement devices in Epicor?

We have lots of special measuring tools that we need to track, ensure their calibrations are current. They are all serialized. We have POs for parts and operations, and shipping/receiving transactions etc.

But what is the best way to have Epicor handle them?

Currently they are all set up as individual serialized parts with their own part number. This doesn’t seem right, but I’m not seeing the “right” way to do it… maybe I’m not familiar with the right module that handles these.

Thanks for any ideas.

Thanks for link; I missed that in search. They have the maintenance module, yet their tools are still set up as individual parts as well… this still doesn’t seem right in my head.
We don’t currently need to track the tool usage in Epicor (ie keep records of exactly which tool was used on which job), so I don’t think we need them as resources.
I’ll look into the maintenance and asset modules. Though I’m not looking to reinvent the wheel… was hoping someone could share a “duh!” way to handle these tools.

The other option is to make a Resource Group for “Tools”, with each tool being a separate Resource. That way they can be assigned to an operation and used that way as a scheduling constraint (can’t have the same tool be in two separate places at once)… but it does mean you need to take more time to assign the CORRECT resource to the operation.

@TerryR
Did you come up with the “duh?” way (or any way) to track usage of the tooling/measuring devices?
We are moving from IQS to Epicor for our device/equipment management.
Hoped to be able to record the measuring devices as equipment at End Activity, but I haven’t been able to make it work.
Any pointers/advice would be appreciated.

No we haven’t… still a mess of parts in Epicor and a spreadsheet to track calibrations etc.
