Don't know of Vantage controlling a buzzer directly, but you could have the
server running Vantage trigger a buzzer off its clock.

Simplest is to use a sound card on the server with the audio out plugged
into the paging/speaker system and schedule a wav file to run at specific
times.

Another option is to have a program activate a relay on a buzzer. Example:
one wire from LPT1 to a 100K resistor to a switching transistor. The
transistor crosses the connections on the buzzer. Program simply sends a
binary number to the LPT1 activating the +5v on the specific pin providing
current to the transistor to switch it on/off. (its less than $5 in parts
and works really well - you can set upto 8 wires/relays per parallel port.
I use this method for entering SPC data out on the shop floor. Add a
soundcard/gameport and I use the joystick pin configuration to wire an input
button. User places part in holder, presses one button, and computer
triggers all the gages in the correct order for reading the data into the
SPC system.)

Some users a while ago posted how they got Vantage to control the breaks and
lunch buzzard. Does anyone have any detail on what needed to be changed in
Vantage and what interface they are using to do this?

Thanks!

We don't use Vantage to control the buzzer but use a small utility called
qwave to play the sound through our PA system at specified times using the
AT commands. Also use a program NIStime to adjust time automatically.

Hope this helps,
Darren

I do this but it is not strictly speaking "controled by Vantage". It is controled by the server running Vantage uising the Scheduler in Windows. Main reason was to make the buzzer sounds as close to possible to when the time changes on the Data Colleciton screens. Employees were arbitraging the differences between the old buzzer and the system time.

Works like this:
-Scheduler runs a very small program at scheduled times that plays a .WAV file.
-Sound card in server sends to paging system
-Employees here bell tone over paging almost exactly when time changes on screen

If you need more details I think I have a document describing what we did.

-Todd C.

The Lunch Buzzard... is that the big bird that swoops in and cleans up the
scraps after the "Roach Coach" leaves the premises? ;) [sorry, couldn't
resist...]
