Completing and closing jobs

We run Invty/Wip everyday. After inventory is reconciled and gross
margin review is done for month end, the capture COS/WIP is then run and
posted.

I am curious,

How frequently do people run Capture COS/WIP?
Do you have a checklist to review prior?

Subject: [Vantage] Completing and closing jobs

I probably have something set up wrong here. We complete a job and it is
ready to ship to the customer. We mark it complete. Now, if I close the
job before we ship it, I cannot create a packing slip. I have been able
to "unclose" a job where this problem has arisen. However, I am guessing
if I had posted costs through the Capture COS/WIP process, I would not
be able to unclose the job.

Is there some setting I need in order to make the job available for
shipping, and ensure the costs are available when I convert my shipment
to a customer invoice, even after I have closed the job? Do I need a
final operation in the job that is simply a transfer to the shipping
department, so the job is not completed until shipping actually ships
the job? If all our jobs went directly from the line into the truck for
shipment, this would not be a problem. But, for various reasons,
sometimes a job may sit for up to a few weeks after completion but
before shipment.

I am only a couple of months into using Vista (8.03.403), and this has
not been a big pain yet. But, it is a nagging issue, and I suspect it
could become a major problem in some future situation.

Completing a job stops labor from being charged to it, closing stops
all transactions from being done to the job. We leave jobs unclosed
for quite some time after they ship in order to gather correct
material costs which can take months to receive. Also you can close a
job, run COS/WIP, and unclose it with any problem.

If you had any labor-edits to make, you'd have to either make Job
Adjustments, or add new labor-detail entries.

Normally you want to run right before the period close. Review your WIP reports and/or run your COS/WIP reconciliation without posting to make sure job reporting looks correct and make sure all jobs have been closed for the period before your run the capture COS
