Regarding serial number enablement for the part, most of our serial numbers will be associated with configured items. How is this handled? Our parts will be configured during order entry.
As long as you don’t change the starting part number for parts on the fly you can serial track a configured part. So if the part number starts out as CFG-Boat and you leave it as CFG-Boat you can serial track it. Ideally you would ship direct from the job as putting it into inventory you have the challenge of figuring out how a boat was constructed unless you go back to the job.
If you create a part number for paperwork purposes but don’t create a real part serial tracking won’t work. This is a truly part on the fly, it truly only exists in the context of the current quote/order/job.
If you create real parts then they are real parts and can be serial tracked like any other part.
Do configurator-changed Part numbers not inherit the serial number from the configurable part? I’ve never tried it, but I would assume that it would keep the serial number based on the OrderDtl.BasePartNum / OrderDtl.BaseRevisionNum.
If you have the configurator create a part record it does inherit the base parts attributes. If you just set the part number (part on the fly) the part number does not exist in the part master so there is no place to set the serial number.
