Creating New Company/Database in 8.03

Are you wanting to add a new company to the existing Database? If so
you can do that under Data Administration Menu under Configure Company.

Does anyone have a checklist for creating a new test company (actually a new database like the Test and Pilot ones).

I regularly restore a backup of the Live Co to the Test Co, for testing (obviously). But now I need a whole other DB, Becausae I need two seperate Test Companies.

I tried just using restoring the Live Co to the Pilot Co, but apparently that DB is of an older "structure" so a restore won't work.

Any way... Here what I was thinking of doing:

1. Create the directory structure for the new Test Co (T2)by copying the entire contents of:
\Mfgsys803 to \T2_803
\MfgsysData to \T2_Data
\MfgWrk803 to \T2_Wrk803

2. Restore a backup of the db from \Mfgsys803 to \T2_803

3. Create a new MfgSys configuration file for the Clients shortcut to T2.

4. Create the DB and AppServers with "Progress Explorer" (with new Port numbers)

5. Start just the DB and the AppServer

6. Launch the T2 via the new shortcut, and edit System Agent (port numbers and server names\paths)

7. Edit the CO name to "TEST CO #2" (so you know which Test Co you're in)

8. Stop and restart all app&process servers and DB using the "Progress Explorer"

Did I miss anything? Or do anything not required, or potentially problematic?

Thanks,

Calvin

Before going through all the setup for a second test server...

You are Progress?
If so, did you try deleting all the files in that Pilot directory and then try restoring a backup of live there again?

I remember that the Progress restore will sometimes throw an error if there are old DB files.

I just decided to restore the Live Co over the Pilot Co (deleting the files in \Pilot803\DB first).

But I'm still curious to what the process would be to make another Company/DB (assume I already used up the Test, Pilot, and Train db's).

And which sub-directories can be shared? We currently have the Test Co (\Test803\...) use some of the Live Co (\Mfgsys803\...) sub-directories and files.

For example the System Agent in the Test Co DB is configured to use the same paths for "Server File", "Client File" and "Client Program" directories as the Live Co.

Thanks in advance

Calvin

Hi Calvin,

Maybe you have an old PC you could use as a test server instead? That might be better than playing with this too much on you production server.

But here is a (really) general outline if you want to experiment.

Proenv
1 - create a new directory for the test database
---- x:\epicor\test2
2 - restore a copy of the live database in that directory

Progress Explorer Tool
Manually copy the live database and appservers - but using the new path and a new port numbers (careful not pick any port numbers already in use). This is manually entering the values on each screen, it can take an hour or two this way. I would not set any of these to auto-start to begin with.

1 - New Database MfgTest2
---- Configurations (New Path)
------ODBC Group (New Port 8360?)
------ MfgSysGroup (New Port 8370?)
2 - New Appservers
- MfgSysTest2 (New log name/path and port number)
- MfgSysTest2ProcessServer (New log name/path and port number)
- MfgSysTest2TaskAgent (New log name/path and port number)
- MfgSysTest2Print (Optional, nmay or may not exist on your server) (New log name/path and port number)

You might be able to save a little entry time by editing the ubroker.properties file directly.
It is located in x:\epicor\oe101b\properties folder

Do you want to create a new company within the same DB, or a completely new
Company in a blank database?

If you want to add a second company to the already existing DB, then you can
open up the Admin Tools for the DB you restored, and then use those to add
another company.

If you want to create a whole new company in a new DB, then you will need to
restore the blank DB from the backup in epicor\mfgsys803\db\newdb and then
open up the admin tools and create the new company there from scratch.

You'll need to resetup everything though since it will be completely blank.

You may need to run a schema change on it though if the backup has not been
updated to the most recent schema.

I just decided to restore the Live Co over the Pilot Co (deleting the files
in \Pilot803\DB first).

For example the System Agent in the Test Co DB is configured to use the same

the Live Co.

Thanks in advance
