Crystal 8.5

FYI...

Crystal v8.5 is a free upgrade to anyone who purchased v8 between
Jan 26, 2001 and April 7, 2001. Call and ask sales for the free
upgrade form.
I just received Crystal Reports 8.5 as a subscription upgrade. Just curious
whether someone else might have received it earlier and tried it. Looks
like some nice features including interactive reports (with parameter
prompts) and more output formats (XML, RTF and Excel). If anyone knows of
any gotchas, especially related to Vantage please advise. I am especially
concerned about compatibility with the report distribution facility they are
moving away from.

Thanks,
-Todd C.

Todd,
Did you receive the upgrade automatically, or did you have to request it? We're in the subscription plan also.

I didn't know anything about it until it showed up. Actually I barely
recall purchasing the subscription now called "Upgrade Advantage". There is
a card inside which states, "If you have received this upgrade as a result
of Crystal Reports Subscription, please note that your Subscription has been
enhanced to Upgrade Advantage."

I suspect they have a distribution pipeline running and you would get it
automatically pretty soon. It was shipped US Postal.

I use the Developer version and with it they also sent a 5 concurrent user
version of Crystal Enterprise for interactive web distribution. One more
thing to try to figure out how to make it work.

I just got Crystal 8.5 yesterday. Looks like some mild, but good new
features.

It appears that the Crystal Enterprise (which came with our Crystal
Professional version update) is an enhancement to the Web Server
Component. It came on a separate CD, so there is no need to install
it if you are still distributing reports with the Compiler (which is
still available as a separate download for 8.5). What sounds really
good to me is the ability to schedule reports. I've been poking
around trying to find good ways to do that for weeks now.

The 5 concurrent user limitation that you mentioned is already a
limitation in Crystal 8.0's Web Component Server. It just means that
no more than 5 people can be running a Crystal Report through the Web
Component server AT ONE TIME. For us that would be rare, especially
with fast-running reports.

What the report scheduler would do for us is immense. We have several
Crystal reports that take 2 to 4 hours to run, and really slow down
the network doing it. (An ODBC weakness). Having them run overnight
would be great!

I have uploaded a PDF document matrix which shows side-by-side
comparisons of the various Crystal versions, all the way back to
version 4.5.

Troy,

I'll be testing that tonight!

I shall post the results to the list, as most of you will still be working
when I post the results here in England.

I've been doing some more reading in the manual.

Crystal Enterprise is meant to replace the Web Component Server (WCS). In fact, if you install Crystal 8.5 on your WCS machine, it will UNINSTALL WCS on that machine. The upside, is that you can install Crystal 8.5 on one machine (w/o Crystal Enterprise) and install Crystal Enterprise on another machine (w/o Crystal 8.5). Thus, with one license, you can design reports on one machine, and distribute them via the Web Server on another.

Crystal Enterprise looks to be much more powerful than the old WCS of Crystal 8.0. Main features: Schedule reports, Report and Menu Security options, and User management -- things I've been wanting to do anyway. The other feature I think I will appreciate: parameters have been improved. The old WCS didn't allow range parameters (I just discovered last week, the hard way). Crystal Enterprise has updated the web access to utilize all the parameters that Crystal Designer is capable of.

Just some notes to pass along.
