Crystal Reports Error Msg

OK, I'll join the "age the programmer" club. I have my Hex-a-Rule ruler in
my hands with the convenient DOS dump line-up on one edge and OS/BPS on the
other and a handy set of Hex to Decimal conversion charts printed in
between. On the flip side very handy 1/10th inch line-printer position
markings. All from Hexco, Inc. of Huston, TX makers of the Hex-Adder (R).
I wonder if they are still in business and what they evolved to. Sort of
like buggy whip makers.

PS - Apologies for progressing this topic digression . I do hope Gary find
a solution to the original issue.

Hello K-Mart Shoppers:

I created a Crystal Report to list Vendor ID, Part Number, Mfg Lot Size,
Unit Cost, Operation Sequence #, and Job Operation Comments. I'm allowing
the comments field (JobOper / CommentText which is defined x(1000)) to
grow, thereby listing all comments for the Operation.

My problem is that some operation comments cause my Crystal Report
to abend with the following message:

"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If
the problem persists, contact the program vendor"

I thought there was just too much data, so I allowed the comments field a
maximum of 1 line (just to test). It still abends on certain jobs. I removed the
comments field and it works fine.

Any suggestions ????

Thank you very much..

Gary,
You must be over 40 with a fair amount of mainframe experience. I don't
think anyone under the age of 40 has ever heard the term "abend." :-)
I don't think the data is causing the program to crash. That type of error
usually occurs when a process tries to access memory outside of its own
space or passes the wrong type of data to another module.
If rebooting the system doesn't resolve the problem (which it will it many
cases), you might try saving your report with a different name and then
deleting fields from your report one at a time to see if the problem goes
away after a particular field is deleted.
Good luck!

Steve,

Ha Ha...too funny....I am over 40 ....I guess you can't teach an old

I rebooted my PC and it still abends...I mean crashes...or whatever
term is currently popular....When I remove the CommentText field
(from JobOper table), it works fine so I am assuming it's the
comments...I'll keep plugging along.

Todd,

Me! Are you referring to ME as one of "you young folks?" Hahahaha
hahahahaha ahahahaha!!!
That's the best laugh I've had in a long time!!!

No, I had an assembly professor who insisted that we would never get
anywhere in the field of computer science unless we could learn to do hex
math (add, subtract, *multiply*, and **divide** ) in our heads. Fortunately
I proved him wrong!

At least.... I think... I did.

Didn't I??

Geez, maybe he was right!

I'm enjoying the humor this morning... Anyway, Crystal doesn't work well with memo/blob fields. My assumption is that when you hit a comment that is too long for Crystal, it bombs out. IF that is the case, the solution is to limit the size of comment field in "Progress" - unfortunately, that may cut off some of your comments, as I believe Crystal's limit is 255 characters (or 250).

One way to test your report is to find a part that a shorter comment field, and select ONLY that part in your report and see if you get the error. Then gradually add groups of parts to see at which point the program 'abends'.

If it is indeed the length of the fields, Epicor has a document outlining how to shorten the length of a field in Progress to 250 characters. Hopefully your comments aren't too lengthy, or you might lose some of your text. The other solution is to use Report Builder, which doesn't seem to have the 255 limitation.

Actually, they do teach the poor kids to read hex in schools today.
Exactly, why nobody knows. But they keep teaching it. If that was not bad
enough for one of my classes a required project was to write an output
routine in binary. Boy, that was a valuable skill I get to use every day of
my life.

Couldn't resist the opportunity to date myself ...turning 40 in October
(stepping on through to the otherside)!
I still have stacks of the dinner plate sized floppies and a couple
removable disc platters in the "cake covers"...
Anyone need a TI-990?? or remember the 5 divisions of a COBOL program?

ahhh, Initial Program Load (IPL) on 327x's and CICS/MVS -- the less
complicated days of JCL and IEBGen'r ;)

HuhHuh... I'm 35 a month from today. My computer collection includes a
1972 vintage DEC PDP 11/35 with a big ole' 180K of gen-U-ine CORE
memory :)

Usually the core is non-volatile, so it can be turned off and restarted to
almost where you were, kinda like a refrigerator sized Palm Pilot. A real
boot (or IPL for the blue guys) requires toggling about 12 words of binary
into the front panel switches. Guess panel LEDs on my Athlon 1200 would
just be a blur, but I kinda miss 'em.

I think the main reason they still make students do that kind of thing falls
into the category of "If I had to suffer through it when I was in school,
then by golly these young kids can do it to!" Its scary but I think that's
what keeps a fair amount of the curriculum alive at some schools. And
before anybody accuses me of slamming college professors, let me add that I
teach computer science classes in the evening myself. I don't make my
students write code in binary but I will make them normalize database
schemas until they can do it in their sleep and that probably comes from the
fact that I went through the same thing as a student. And about the only
thing that's good for in this job is recognizing a poor one when I see it -
not that one comes to mind immediately.

Actually, they do teach the poor kids to read hex in schools today.
Exactly, why nobody knows. But they keep teaching it. If that was not bad
enough for one of my classes a required project was to write an output
routine in binary. Boy, that was a valuable skill I get to use every day
of
my life.

Geez Steve ...

That's the problem with you young folks these days ... You kids probably
don't even know how to read a core dump in hex ...

What are they teaching in schools these days ?

Gary,
You must be over 40 with a fair amount of mainframe experience. I don't
think anyone under the age of 40 has ever heard the term "abend." :-)
I don't think the data is causing the program to crash. That type of
error
usually occurs when a process tries to access memory outside of its own
space or passes the wrong type of data to another module.
If rebooting the system doesn't resolve the problem (which it will it many
cases), you might try saving your report with a different name and then
deleting fields from your report one at a time to see if the problem goes
away after a particular field is deleted.
Good luck!

Subject: [Vantage] Crystal Reports Error Msg

Hello K-Mart Shoppers:

I created a Crystal Report to list Vendor ID, Part Number, Mfg Lot
Size,
Unit Cost, Operation Sequence #, and Job Operation Comments. I'm
allowing
the comments field (JobOper / CommentText which is defined x(1000)) to
grow, thereby listing all comments for the Operation.

My problem is that some operation comments cause my Crystal Report
to abend with the following message:

"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut
down.
If
the problem persists, contact the program vendor"

I thought there was just too much data, so I allowed the comments
field
a
maximum of 1 line (just to test). It still abends on certain jobs. I
removed the
comments field and it works fine.

Any suggestions ????

Thank you very much..
