Brian,
1. According to a tech. support person at Seagate, the 5 user limit is on data calls to the server. It is not the same report, but ANY report trying to get data. Once the data is viewed in the browser, it doesn't count any more. I've never seen the error in our case, but we're just starting to use CWS.
2. I installed Crystal Enterprise right on top of CWS without a hitch. Took about 10 minutes. Again, according to tech support, you don't HAVE to install Crystal 8.5 on the server unless you want to use ASP (ASP is built into Crystal 8.5, not Crystal Enterprise in this new version). However, I ended up installing Crystal 8.5 anyway, because the install asked for a file that was only on the Crystal 8.0 disk. I thought that was odd, so I went back and installed 8.5 as well.
Once I did the install, people were running the reports immediately. New users were asked to download an ActiveX component the first time they run a new report. On one workstation, (Win95, IE 5.0), there was an error ("ActiveX Viewer is Unable to Create Its Resource Objects"), which has to do with IE Scripting and DCON. There is a document on the subject, and I think we'll get it worked out. The documentation recommends the latest Internet Explorer (and does NOT recommend Netscape's latest release).
The advantages to using Crystal Enterprise? A. Enhanced Paramenters (CWS doesn't support "Ranges" in Parameters for instance), B. Scheduled running of reports, C. User Security and password maintenance.

Subject: [Vantage] Crystal Reports -Web Server user limit- & 8.5
A couple of questions regarding Crystal Reports.
1. I've heard some talk about there being a 5 user restriction on
the Crystal Web Server. I have had many different machines with the
same report open at the same time without incident. Is the limit
just on users getting data from the server at the same time? What
happens when the limit is reached? Can you increase the limit by
buying more licenses?
I would appreciate any details from someone who has run into a
problem with the 5 user restriction.
2. Is 8.5 OK to use with Vantage 5.0? What kind of hassle is it to
migrate from the CWS to the new version? Are there benefits to the
upgrade that would outweight the hassle? I just got the CWS going a
few weeks ago and unless there are compelling reasons to move forward
I may wait a while before upgrading.
Thanks for all replies,
