We are using the standard .NET runtime for the clients. Any ideas for
this?

Make sure you are using the odbcad32 file from the Windows-->SysWOW64
folder.
Also, in the DSN setup use the server IP address, not the server name.
We are using VMWare (R2 64 bit server) and RDS for the clients (R2 64
bit)
