Custom Programming

Does anyone know the number for custom programming -- we have need to
import parts and BOM revisions from an external PLM system.

Thanks!

Hi Folks,

Are any of you importing bills of material into Vantage from Autocad
2000 or Autocad LT? If so, does Autocad provide a file in the correct
format or do you have to reformat prior to importing?

Thanks in anticipation,

Hi Rob,

I haven't used Autocad as my primary source for BOM information but I can
guarantee you that you will need to massage the output of any CAD package
prior to import into Vantage. You will need to reference the PART, PARTMTL,
and PARTOPR table definitions for your specific version of Vantage to
identify the format and location of the fields Vantage requires. I use
Microsoft Access as my primary tool to "invent" information needed in
several Vantage columns and usually just link my Access database to the CAD
output and then create the necessary CSV files from a query.

Note that Vantage does not accept a header row so you must match their
definition exactly when you prepare the CSV files.

Note too that parts called-out in the BOM must exist in the part table (or
be part of your import)

Dale,
I assume you also would need Vantage's Import module to do this as well?? We don't have that module, but I'd love to know how to import BOM's as things stand now.

However, as it is now, it only imports single level, which is a problem for
us.
Troy,

You're correct in that I do have the BOM import/ export module so I can
support a full import of data into a BOM. There is a simple import
available in the "Part File Maintenance" screen that will allow you to
import a single level BOM and "attach" it to a specific revision of the
part. The import is very limited (only allows
"PartNum","Description","Type", Qty). I've never used it.

In my case, I create a set of CSV files that I pass to the BOM import
utility.

Let me know what specifics, if any, you need. I loaded all of our BOMs this
way.

I haven't used this in a year or so, but if memory serves me, you have to go
into the part master and call up a part and create a revision to the part
and then you can import your BOM.

Hello Group,

H.R. Management has decided that allowing people to change their shift when
clocking in is not a good thing, so of course they ask Info. Tech. to take
that ability away. I assume we will have to make a modification to the
program which seems easy enough. I just wanted to know if anyone has seen a
setting to take the shift change out of the clock in sequence before we make
this change.

Thanks

Troy,

I have the BOM Copy/Import/Export Utility which is a standard product but is
only available from Custom Programming. (I never have figured that one out)
This utility allows import of the full BOM including bubble and operation
linkages. I'm still on V4 so there may be another way to import in V5 that
I am unaware.

There isn't a flag in company configuration, and I don't think
there's another such screen. The only solution without source code
would be to have Epicor custom programming do it. I would be
interested to know if source code is still available.

Thanks Lonnie,

We have the source for Vantage 4... It took some doing, but they
grandfathered us in since we purchased it with the original version. I
guess we will be forced to do yet another custom modification.

Actually, I think its another profit center. Since it's "not part of the
Vantage package", it's not under maintenance. You get to buy it again for
each release of Vantage. The utility costs $2500 and had ABSOLUTELY NO
changes from what Custom Programming published as the specifications for its
function. (I.e. They made no modifications of any sort for my company) I
just installed the package as delivered to me (and unknown others) and used
it.

I expect to have my training copy of V5 up in the next couple of days so
maybe I'll have a clearer view of any improvements then.

The Vantage Custom Programming Group within Epicor doesn't limit itself to
one-off jobs. They have their own little line of products to keep them
profitable. In addition to the two import / export utilities, there is the
"keyboard optimized" replacement for Labor Entry. Very infuriating that
this stuff never gets incorporated back into the standard product.

We are thinking about asking Epicor to do some custom programming. Just
wanted to see if anyone has had good or bad experiences with this (how long
it took for them to complete, cost, as well as functionality)

Also, how have the Perspectives conferences been. Are they worth the
time/money?
Can't answer about customer programming (what we have from them has been "canned" routines (like ADP payroll transfer) and has been OK. I shy away from anything custom as much as possible to make version upgrades easier.

But (now hopping on soap box) - Perspectives is the best/cheapest education you can get on a wide variety of topics. Not only in the sessions but in just plain talking to people. A lot like here, on-line, but face to face and way more fun. I've been to every one in the last 5 years and ALWAYS come home with a ton of ideas (even the post 9/11 ghost town in Orlando). Funny how being away from the office lets you reflect and connect ideas with needs back home. With Sonoma coming and the changes from it I would think this year will be more critical than ever to stay on top of things. Needless to say, I'm going.
