Customer testing after Shipment

Sometimes there are things that need to be done after the sales order has shipped from the system.
For example, let’s say we virtually ship product to the customer and hold it in customer owned inventory while waiting for them to pick it up (could be 2wks to 6mos). We want to recognize revenue. While waiting for pickup, the customer wants to do an inspection by a 3rd party. Currently the sales order is left open with a separate line on it as a reminder for the inspection but I think that could be improved. Are there any creative ways to track this inspection requirement?

At a previous place we’d RMA it back into IIRC DMR and then clear it from inspection when. The customer was ready for it.

How about staging the shipment?

Unfortunately they want to recognize revenue by shipping and invoicing it.
