Data Conversion 8.03.XX to 9.04.506

And that is why you should never install to the default directories with an
installation of OpenEdge, Epicor 9, Vantage or any product from Epicor.

Thanks for all your reply's. After speaking with Epicor I was informed that
Open Edge does not like to have <spaces> in their unc path to the
installation. Support sent me a workaround that had me copy the "Server",
"Client" and "ClientServer" folders from their location under "Program
Files" to a new folder in the root of the C drive named "Epicor".

Ran the scripts again and they worked correctly. I can share this document
with anyone that needs it or you can get it from support directly. It would
have been nice to have this documented somewhere.

odbc in the x64 and x32 worlds, and I now have a rule to make BOTH odbc

that I had to grant manually that were not described in the install docs.

It's a text file you can edit that the Admin Tool looks at to see what
conversions have been run and where to pick up the conversion process. 1
line per sql script, change the "yes" to "no" and remove the dates, then
re-run the Admin tool and it will try again... Careful with both the SQL db
and the progress db versions prior to a run, they need to match exactly. I
hope you have backups of both? or go back a few versions until you do.

I am trying to upgrade to 9.05 based on recommendations from Epicor. We had planned to go to 9.04.XX but they said 9.05 was out and more stable. Long story short we paid them a big chunck of money to install the Epicor 9.05 server and prepare for the upgrade. We were then informed that our 'upgrade' did not include converting the data. If we want them to convert the data that was extra. When we declined they then told us that we would have to first convert it to 9.04 and then to 9.05...ughh. Would have been nice to disclose that up front as now we are stuck.

With that background we opted to go ahead with the upgrade ourselves since I am honestly fed up with dealing with them. We built out a server to host Epicor 9.04 and proceeded to run the installation using the Installation Guide provided on Epicweb.

When it's time to run the data conversion we get to the step (13) Launch Epicor 9 Schema Change. After it runs for a few moments it shows errors regarding missing several .log files. I tried to run again and it now says "No Schema Change Needed" and shuts down.

Continue to next steps including running prorest to overwrite what I believe is the new schema holder. However, I cannot start the App Servers in Progress.

I have no idea where to go from here but I am completely stuck and this work has to be done by Monday morning. It's now Sunday and I am in full on panic mode.

Does anyone out there have a suggestion?
My only suggestion, which you probably already tried is: Re-install your 9.4 and try to re-convert from your original 8.3 data.

Not sure your original issue, however, if you are on SQL, you can manually run the schema changes – open your EPICOR905 directory -> ClientServer \ DB \ SQL (or UniCode) and you will need to run each SQL script they have there from the level your dB is now – pretty simple – Epicor version and point release version, so if you are on 8.03.500 you would start from the next script -> 800-501.sql and run each until you get to your current 905 version

Thanks, I tried to run the scripts one by one without using 9.04 but eventually going all the way to 9.05. It completed with no errors but now what? I can start the Database and Appservers but when I log in it says it cannot get the company information.

I know in the past for patches you ran the admin tools and it would do further data conversions for the patch. I tried doing this by following the install guide but it did not run any type of conversion in the admin tools. Is there a method to force this conversion to run that anyone is aware of?

I can log into the application now but I get an error that it cannot connect to the company information and the menu bar is empty.

I'm no expert here, but this summer I did have errors with upgrading from 9.04 to 9.05, SQL, x32 progress & E9 on an x64 machine and worked with Mike England in support to get this resolved. My root errors were all with odbc in the x64 and x32 worlds, and I now have a rule to make BOTH odbc settings for everything as it appears some apps and conversions walk across the process lines. Running the SQL scripts is not enough as there are changes being made to the progress "schema db" by the Admin tool at the same time they run the SQL scripts. Schema changes are documented in the install guide and I assume you performed
Did you load a new license (it is a new product) and link to your company?
Support will tell you that you must follow their steps – I have converted several times using SQL scripts
Can you bring dB and apps up in the OE?
Can you log into admin?

I can't offer direction on the conversion routine, but would offer to look at the DMT software from Epicor. It will give you the flexibility of loading your data and also work thru changing your data later if you wanted to (change all of the product groups on the part master for example).

The cost is not that much, and it would pay for itself.

If you want more information. Send me a note.

Thanks for all your reply's. After speaking with Epicor I was informed that Open Edge does not like to have <spaces> in their unc path to the installation. Support sent me a workaround that had me copy the "Server", "Client" and "ClientServer" folders from their location under "Program Files" to a new folder in the root of the C drive named "Epicor".

Ran the scripts again and they worked correctly. I can share this document with anyone that needs it or you can get it from support directly. It would have been nice to have this documented somewhere.

> > Running the SQL scripts is not enough as there are changes being made to the progress "schema db" by the Admin tool at the same time they run the SQL scripts. In theory you could restore a proper version of the progress schema db at each step... But the key here is a file in the xxx905\ClientServer\db\sql (or SQLUnicode) directory named vschmsql.dcd It's a text file you can edit that the Admin Tool looks at to see what conversions have been run and where to pick up the conversion process. 1 line per sql script, change the "yes" to "no" and remove the dates, then re-run the Admin tool and it will try again... Careful with both the SQL db and the progress db versions prior to a run, they need to match exactly. I hope you have backups of both? or go back a few versions until you do.

I tried doing this by following the install guide but it did not run any type of conversion in the admin tools. Is there a method to force this conversion to run that anyone is aware of?

Long story short we paid them a big chunck of money to install the Epicor 9.05 server and prepare for the upgrade. We were then informed that our 'upgrade' did not include converting the data. If we want them to convert the data that was extra. When we declined they then told us that we would have to first convert it to 9.04 and then to 9.05...ughh. Would have been nice to disclose that up front as now we are stuck.
