Scratch that last request for help. I figured it out.
In case there's any interest in the solution, the problem was that I
added a column without making it part of a "named range" in Excel, so
the conversion tool could not see the column I added.
To name a range in Excel: highlight the range of cells, choose
Insert - Name - Define and type in a name for the range. You then need
to use that range name in the Source Query field on the Query Tab of
the Data Conversion Tool and voila...everything is hunky-dory...
