Deframentation of database

James what were the scatter factors? I was told at a Progress DBA training that with scatter factors of 2 or more on heavily used tables you should consider a dump and load for performance reasons. It would also be a good opportunity to change your blocksize if that is needed.

Subject: [Vantage] Deframentation of database

Question that was brought up yesterday during a tech support call . . . . .
. .
I was told it's time to do a defragmentation of our database due to the
scatter factor on several of our tables and the size of our current
database.
(2 gigs)
I was told this would double our performance of our database.

I have been working here two years and no one here has ever heard of having
to do this.
(We go all the way back to Vantage 5.0)

I am not disputing that it is a good idea.

What I am looking for is your experience of if you have done it etc?

Epicor supplied me with a kit to do a dump of my database to a file then
reloading a that file into a new database.

They indicated this needs to be done about once a year

Again this is the first I have ever heard of it and I am curious if anyone
out there has done this or has a plan to do this on an annual basis etc.

Thanks

If what you're referring to is a dumb and load, then yes I've done it.
However, I can't see I saw a tremendous improvement to speed, etc.

Double your performance??????? That's a good one.
I have done this, we are also about 2gig, be careful the dump will be larger
than 2gig so have plenty of space available. It will clear out the deleted
record space of the database so your database may be a 5% smaller when
finished. I think it's a good idea but you may see no noticeable performance
difference or only marginal performance improvement after performing this
procedure.

I would have to agree... I also have done it and I did not really see that much improvement in the speed ...
