I looked into Misc Packing slip but apparently 3.x (yes we are still on 3)
doesn't have misc packing slips.
Thanks for the advice.I'll pass this on, it sounds similar to what I wanted
to do (even the alternative) but when someone is convinced they're right and
proceed in they're direction it can be tough to come back and clean up their
mess.
Thanks again

Lydia is on the money with this advice. This is what we do to record
shipments of items which will not be billed. Mostly we use it to record
when we're sending gages back to the customer when we're done with their
order. But it would definitely work for your scenario, too.

Jim:
You are correct. Once that packing slip is pulled and invoiced, you can
"re-open" the sales order and the line, but it is a slippery slope-and you
still can't delete the line if a packing slip/A/R invoice has been created
against it. Nor would you want to, someone in accounting would hand you your
head. If your invoice is correct as far as $, perhaps the best way to go
would be a misc packing slip-in 5.1 you can reference a sales order or job
on a misc. packing slip (don't remember others). Then you've shipped all
three components that make up the part, Sales Analysis says you've shipped
the correct qty, A/R is expecting the right amount of money and your
customer thinks you guys are a little "off" this time-but you don't have to
explain some interesting credit/re-invoice situation to them.
Do you ever sell the components separately? Are they in your part master?
Another alternative would be to go ahead and create another sales order,
ship the component at no charge-but the misc. pack slip will still give you
a tracking number.
