Dimensional Inventory

Kurt,

We are a steel service center and process sheet/plate from thin gauge to 14"
thick. After reviewing the dimensional inventory in Vantage we decided it
was unworkable for us for exactly the same reason. We create drops all day,
every day, and very rarely are they the same size. With Vantage we would
end up with hundreds of dimensional codes per part within a few months.
Vantage's dimensional inventory must have been setup for companies like
lumber yards that "Stock" specific sizes of cut sheets by intent such as 1/2
sheets or 1/4 sheets of plywood.

I would suggest you ask your Vantage sales person for the name and phone
number for someone at Morgan Bronze in Chicago. I believe, although I'm not
sure, that Morgan had some custom programming done to help this situation.
It's at least worth a call.

Subject: [Vantage] Dimensional Inventory

Is anyone on onelist using dimensional inventory in Vantage?? We have been
shown how Dimensional Inventory works a couple of times, and we still have
questions and concerns about how it works. One specific issue we have with
Vantage's dimensional inventory is the fact that you cannot delete a
dimension code even if there is a zero quantity for that dimensioned part.
For example, we use a lot of hot-rolled sheet. If we have a part # for 12
gauge hot rolled sheet and track it by dimensions, we will have dimensioned
parts for full sheets (48"x120") as well as drop pieces (20" x 60" and many
others). From what we've been told, when we issue a dimensioned part from
inventory(the 20"x60" piece for example), the 20"x60" dimension codes stay
on the list of possible sizes. The system does not remove it even though
the quantity is zero. This is an issue to us due to the fact that we would
prefer to only see the dimensioned sizes of the items that we have
available. We do not want to spend time scrolling through dimensioned parts
that are not available to use (zero quantity). To work around this issue,
our sales rep. has recommended writing a custom program that filters out all
of the dimensioned items with a zero quantity OR writing a report that only
pulls in the items that have a quantity not equal to zero. Feedback from
anyone that is using dimensional inventory and has addressed this issue
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Major uses the system you describe, with one twist... We stock flat-sheet
acrylic for use in manufacturing skylights. We have two part numbers per
part: full sheet material is PN 5418-060120, with the suffix indicating that
it's 60"x120". As an aside, it's very helpful to pad suffixes with zeros so
all of your part numbers are the same length, and thus sort properly. The
second PN is 5418-shorts. This part has a default dimension equal to the
full-size sheet. All of the drops get new dimension codes indicating their
true size. In your case, the dimension code we would set up would be 020060,
for 20"x60". You'd enter a conversion factor that would indicate how many of
the shorts would make a full sheet. In this case (it's great the math worked
out!) the conversion factor would be 6.000000000.

Your part master doesn't get cluttered with thousands of part numbers, and
Vantage still tracks your shorts. In our case, we sometimes have 30-50
dimension codes under the "-shorts" part number. Two caveats: By giving the
shorts a different part number, the quantity of full-size sheet doesn't get
inflated, and; whenever you use a mathematical conversion factor, like
Vantage's system, you'll sometimes get some weirdness, like 0.997 sheets in
stock, or 1.032 sheets in stock. Your folks will just have to get used to
that.
