Dummy terminal question

Todd,
Just for your reference. I use 486dx66 with 16mb and some 486dx100..
(just before the y2k scare...very cheap) I use NT terminal server and run
the session for the pc from there. Terminal Server has connection software
for users to run sessions and I put this in the 95 startup folder so on
bootup it goes into Vantage. The 486 with a Keyboard and mouse have been
running for 2 year 24 hours a day in a very hostile environment, I am
surprised with there performance (I do use an industrial air with 100psi and
blow them out from time to time).

I know I have seen some of you guys out there talk about dummy terminals (consist of only keyboard, mouse, and monitor). We might want to consider this as an option when we go forth with Data Collection on the job floor.

Would you explain how you have them set up and exactly the benefits of having them?

Thanks!

We use a PC, monitor, keyboard and mouse. It works just fine. We have
four data collection PCs. When we went to Vantage we bought our server
and eight new PCs which went basically to office users. Our data
collection sites consist of three old dog PCs and one new fast Gateway
unit. The operating system for the three old slow systems is windows95
and windows98, while the Gateway uses NT. We use windows NT Back Office
for our server. Everything works fine. The data collection units would
be better if they were upgraded to NT. When we have a power outage, we
have to manually bring up and log on the win95/win98 units onto the
server and to vantage. The NT units do it automatically.

Hope this helps.

Steve,
We are implementing that exact mode in two weeks. I also had some old PCs
but ran into trouble installing Vantage Data Collection when the Progress
Client part failed due to the PCs not meeting minimum specs (P-75s and P-90s
w/32MB RAM). I have since determined that the P-90s will work if I put 64MB
in them but had already bought 10 new Celeron-566s with 64MB (under $500
ea). Just how old and slow are your "dogs" and do they perform OK for shop

Todd,
When we bought our new system we took the best of the old dogs to use in
the system. They were about 5-7 year-old P1-133 units and because it
would help speed, we added RAM chips to get them all up to 32MB. Since
these units are primarily used for Vantage Data Collection and e-mail to
supervisors, we have had no problems with them. We have had no problem
with computer speed at end of shift. It takes less time now that the
employees are well adapted to the system. As far as using your slower
computers, it should be relatively easy to test you clock out speed
before major modification.

You can set-up a Data Collection icon which just brings up the data
collection module without going to the main menu. The Vantage
installation person did that for us when he installed Vantage at our
facility. It should be relatively easy to setup. Even without the
icon, they don't need to go into the main menu. Having them use windows
Start, Programs, Vantage, then Data Collection is easy. They just have
to a simple password when the date collection login comes up. We use
"labor" as Vantage for all stations. If you have to login to the
server, we use "labor1", labor2, etc., as each of the computer user
names. Since they only have security access for data collection under
"labor", it makes it easy for the supervisors or lead people to kick the
units back on when we have powder outages/surges from thunderstorms,
etc. We are experimenting with small 6 minute voltage backup units to
keep the powder on for each of the labor collection stations that are
not on NT. We probably can upgrade each of the PCs with NT, but we
would have to buy additional licenses. The backup units are cheaper
that the licenses.

One of the toughest things is for the employees is for them to trust the
electronic time clock, versus the time clock they could quickly clock in
and out on a see the verification of the time themselves. We kept using
both systems for a few weeks, but we couldn't get them all to use it
every day until we told them they had to clock in Vantage or not get
paid and we took out the old time clocks. We had the supervisors
monitor the time daily for quite some time.

How do I set up my data collection PCs to do this? I know there is a BIOS
setting to make it come back up automatically after power outage, but how do
I get it to log back onto the domain by itself? They are running Windows
NT.

You have to edit the registry.
Run regedt32
At the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Add the following values of Data Type = REG_SZ
AutoAdminLogon:1
DefaultUserName:username (The username to logon with)
DefaultPassword:password (The password to logon with)

Good Luck,

www.egroups.com, login and be sure to save your password, choose My Groups,

If you are not so comfortable with editing the registry, you can simply
download TweakUI from Microsoft and install it. The download is short and
once installed you can go to the control panel and you will find the tweak
icon. There is a tab for logon and you can set it from there. Easy as pie.
