Dump and load

Has anyone performed a dump and load to their Vantage database recently? We
are planning on doing this over the holidays in an attempt to improve our
Vantage performance. We ran the TABANYLYS command to gather statistics and
it showed many of our tables with a scatter index of greater than the 2
recommended (many of the bigger table had 6-8 for the scatter index) so we
think it should help with performance. We have been on Vantage for about 3.5
years and our multi-extent database is has 15 .d files at 204,800 kb with
matching .b files which in total would be over 6 GB. Does anyone have any
tips or recommendations? The only instructions I have come from the Progress
Database Guide and Reference.

Tim,
I'm planning on doing a dump and load over the holidays also. 6 GB wow!
It's good to know that Vantage works with that big of a database. The last
time I talked to support they were going to send me a dump and load kit. I
just put a request in to remind them.

I did a dump & load this summer. Support sent me a "Kit" for my version. I
was able to practice on my test server and I'm glad I did. I had a little
trouble. Your disk space is going critical with a 6GB database. You need
enough room for at least 3 full copies of the database and run to run. What
version are you guys dumping and loading?

When doing a dump and load in version 4, I got an error - 1532. It's
something support knew about and had a work around. Ask them about any know
errors before starting. It might keep you from having to start all over
again. Especially if support isn't in.
The other things I ran into: I didn't get the DB structure the way I wanted
it the first time. I was going from a single volumn to a multiple volumn and
didn't get the size I wanted, the first time. I appended the multiple
volumns instead of creating a whole new structure (vantage.st).
I also tried the directions "if you don't have enough room on your C:\" for
the dump & load. I couldn't get it to work. Luckly I had plenty of room, I
just didn't want to crowd the operating system if I didn't have to.
Hope this helps.
Nancy

We did a dump & load process recently....
Shut down Vantage,
Backup complete Vantage database & Directory structure
Run Dump & Load utility process
Verify Database works.

For our (almost) 1 Gig database, this process took 4 hours. Bet on at least
doubling that for your database.
