This is a guess, but you might be able to add the the "-skip" parameter to your shortcut and may bypass the update. At least that's how I do it in E9.

 

Also, check the version value in your local config file to see if it matches with the version on your server.

Another thing has come up – but just for me and not for other people (so far)….

 

When I fire up the Training DB and then close it a switch to the Test DB, that we are now populating with initial setups, it runs an Auto Update that copies several hundred files before giving a login screen.  If I then go back to the Training DB it does the update again.  Every time I switch back and forth it takes 10-15 minutes of copying.  This is before the login so I don’t think it would be a setting in my user profile but could there be something in my local config files telling it to do an update every time?  I’ll look at those but in the meantime if this is a known about thing a point in the right direction would be appreciated.
