EDI + TIE Commerce

Karl,

If the gulp is due to the massive cost associated with EDI, I would suggest a third party that provides a managed service for EDI. The setup costs are MUCH less expensive and then you will pay a transaction cost (which you would pay with a VAN anyway).

My contact's quote "We also have a managed service where we perform all the translation and manipulation on our servers and merely exchange files with you (flat files, delimited, XML, etc). This may allow for more simple integration on your side and perhaps eliminate the need for purchasing an e-commerce module for your ERP systems."

I am not affiliated with them at all. I just know from experience that the cost to implement EDI is very high and I have looked for alternative ways to keep my costs low. Additionally, I dont have the resources in house to do EDI. That would require an EDI administrator to keep track of it all, but by using a managed service it could be handled by one person.

Again I offer you to contact me offline and I will give you the contact info. I would think that it is worth a phone call.

Jeff

If, based on the number of suppliers who are willing to give you a cost reduction, and the reduction in internal headcount vs. printing and faxing PO's, you can recoup this investment, then it does make sense to proceed.
