I tried to apply the debit memo against the original invoice. it is a cancellation but I got the following message
This invoice was not cancelled by this Debit Memo
any ideas what I did wrong.

Is it possible you were applying to the wrong Invoice (maybe a replacement Invoice, instead of the original one that was cancelled)?
Even stranger, I got the error, but the Debit Memo is NOT a Cancellation, and the target Invoice was not cancelled.
