Epicor 9 - Problems Printing Some Customised Reports

Bernie Walker and I have been talking offline and the Progress edition
appears to be the V8 version with some simple Find/Replace operations and
really doesn't add anything E9 specific. In fact, it still talks about
"Vista/Vantage", not Epicor 9. Also, it references OE101B in the document
where E9 runs on OE101C.

Hi All,

We have recently upgraded to Epicor 9 from Vantage 8 and have a problem printing our customised reports.

Firstly, some table names had changes so I have sorted those in Crystal.

The problem that we have is when you go to preview a report, it gives the following error ...

Error Detail
============
Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.

Stack Trace
===========
  at System.String.Concat(String str0, String str1)
at Epicor.Mfg.BO.ReportMonitor.TransferReport(String sysRowID, String dataPath, String definitionPath)
at Epicor.Mfg.UI.Adapters.ReportMonitorAdapter.TransferReport(String sysRowID, String fileNameData, String fileNameRepDef)

When you click OK to that, you get the following error ...

Error Detail
============
Load report failed.

Stack Trace
===========
  at CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ReportClientDocumentWrapper.EnsureDocumentIsOpened()
at CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument.Load(String filename, OpenReportMethod openMethod, Int16 parentJob)
  at CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument.Load(String filename, OpenReportMethod openMethod)
  at Epicor.Mfg.Lib.Report.EpiCrystalViewer.LoadReport(Object state)

  at CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ReportClientDocumentWrapper.Open(Object& DocumentPath, Int32 Options)
  at CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ReportClientDocumentWrapper.EnsureDocumentIsOpened()

The reports used to work on Vantage 8 perfectly.

The standard reports run - it only appears to be customised reports.

The reports are only approx 6mb in size (due to logos etc) and nothing else is running on the PC when printing the reports.

We have tried this on several PCs and all of them give the error.

The error only happens 75% of the time - other times, the reports will run and open perfectly which suggests the Crystal Report and Data Definition etc are all OK.

Any help or info on similar experiences would be appreciated.

Cheers,

CHRIS THOMPSON

Hi Blake,

We are using Progress.

It is almost as if the services that handle the printing are allocated enough memory as it seems to go on the size of report whether they rpint or don't.

Any help would be appreciated.

This problem sounds familiar to me but I haven't had to deal with it in
a while. Are your Progress settings correctly set up on the server? It
seems like Progress needs more resources allocated to it. Maybe Vantage
goofed up again with their Epicor 9 requirements/settings like they did
with version 8. Did you exceed the required hardware specifications for
Epicor 9?

Thanks,

Blake Clemens

In your Progress Explorer Tool-Databases... have you messed around with
adding more servers to your ODBC group? Or allocating more/less users
per server in the ODBC Group? Just thinking out loud here. Is it the
same reports that don't work or does it just happen sporadically to all
customized reports?

Hi Charlie,

It is a S O Acknowledgement - is that ODBC?

Not really sure what OSBC is.

The reports used to work on Vantage 8 perfectly.

The standard reports run - it only appears to be customised reports.

The reports are only approx 6mb in size (due to logos etc) and nothing
else is running on the PC when printing the reports.

We have tried this on several PCs and all of them give the error.

The error only happens 75% of the time - other times, the reports will
run and open perfectly which suggests the Crystal Report and Data
Definition etc are all OK.

Any help or info on similar experiences would be appreciated.

Cheers,

CHRIS THOMPSON

I havent messed with any settings (whether Epicor have them set correctly is another story).

It is only the larger reports that we are having issues with.

Sometimes, the reports will run, but if you try them again you can put money on them not running for several more times.

adding more servers to your ODBC group? Or allocating more/less users

same reports that don't work or does it just happen sporadically to all
customized reports?

This problem sounds familiar to me but I haven't had to deal with it in
a while. Are your Progress settings correctly set up on the server? It
seems like Progress needs more resources allocated to it. Maybe Vantage
goofed up again with their Epicor 9 requirements/ settings like they did
with version 8. Did you exceed the required hardware specifications for
Epicor 9?

If it one of the canned reports from Epicor it most likely is not ODBC.

In computing, Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) provides a standard software
API method for using database management systems (DBMS). The designers of
ODBC aimed to make it independent of programming languages, database
systems, and operating systems.

Basically it is a means of connecting crystal to the Epicor 9 Database that
allows crystal to extract data from Epicor 9.

The mass majority of the stock epicor reports however use a combination of
BAQs, and report data definitions to extract the data and then an XML file
is generated that is read into crystal via an ADO file connection.

You can find these intermediate files in
drive:\epicor\mfgsysdata\reports\*USERNAME*\XXXXXXX.XML.

The username part will be filled with the name of the user who ran the
report. XXXXXXX will be the name of the report and then some random numbers
for example ARINVOICE1235645.XML. You need to watch the folder directly
after you run the report. The file will show up and then after a little
while it will delete itself. If you copy the file out you can open it and
view the data with your favorite XML viewer / editor.

Just a warning I'm not an Epicor 9 user but I highly doubt they changed this
whole process too much. I real 9 user can confirm or deny if they want.

Hi Charlie,

It is a S O Acknowledgement - is that ODBC?

Not really sure what OSBC is.

If these custom reports run VIA ODBC you may be running up against that ODBC
size limit. I know the fix for that has been thrown around a couple of
times. I didn't have much luck with it though.

Support has always told me to tweak the settings according to my
system's performance. I can't tell you exactly what setting and where
would need tweaked but I would contact support and ask them what areas
may need their settings changed a bit according to the problem you are
seeing. They will probably be very vague with their answer because they
don't want to take responsibility. Maybe you have done this already, I
don't know. We had problems with our settings in Version 8 and it took
us a long, long time until things started running at a tolerable pace.

Thanks,

Blake Clemens

In your Progress Explorer Tool-Databases. .. have you messed around with
adding more servers to your ODBC group? Or allocating more/less users
per server in the ODBC Group? Just thinking out loud here. Is it the
same reports that don't work or does it just happen sporadically to all
customized reports?

Thanks,

Hi Blake,

Our servers are as per the latest hardware requirements spec.

Everything else runs well, it only seems the 'larger' reports that dont.

I would have thought there would be a setting somewhere to allocate more
memory to certain processes.

Cheers,

CHRIS

This problem sounds familiar to me but I haven't had to deal with it in
a while. Are your Progress settings correctly set up on the server? It
seems like Progress needs more resources allocated to it. Maybe Vantage
goofed up again with their Epicor 9 requirements/ settings like they did
with version 8. Did you exceed the required hardware specifications for
Epicor 9?

Hi Blake,

We are using Progress.

It is almost as if the services that handle the printing are allocated
enough memory as it seems to go on the size of report whether they rpint
or don't.

Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: [Vantage] Epicor 9 - Problems Printing Some Customised Reports

Hi All,

We have recently upgraded to Epicor 9 from Vantage 8 and have a problem
printing our customised reports.

Firstly, some table names had changes so I have sorted those in Crystal.

The problem that we have is when you go to preview a report, it gives
the following error ...

When you click OK to that, you get the following error ...

Cheers,

CHRIS THOMPSON

whenever i've had problems running a report and the error message
contained "The system cannot find the file specified" it meant the
report file Vantage is trying to access isn't available for some reason.
Sometimes it's just a typo in the report's path defined within Vantage
or something really simple like share permissions on the target file's
folder. Sometimes the file is just plain missing.

It 's worth a quick check, even if just to eliminate it as a
possibilty.

Hi David,

Those were my initial thoughts, but the report sometimes runs and sometimes doesn't which confirms the file path must be correct.

I think I have tied it down to the Crystal Report file size. If it is 560kb it runs well, if it is 3.4mb it doesn't.

By the way, I know there are a lot of David Atkinsons in the World, but do I know you?

Cheers,

CHRIS THOMPSON
