Epicor Knowledge Mentor

Wondering if anyone is using EKM. We own the license and built some stuff with it back in 2019 but no one has touched it since. Wondering if its worth it to dust it off and start it back up again.

I don’t have it at my current company, but had it before. It is a fantastic tool but very labor intensive.

I personally think that tool (which is owned by SAP) is only really useful for large Fortune 500 companies. Any small companies will just end up not using it due to the resources required to create and maintain content.

That was my first thought. we had a guy back in 2019 that his entire job was EKM, now i wonder if we would be able to maintain the content.

I think it depends weather your clients will use them.
Personally, I’m compulsive about building documentation but… seems like it ends up only benefiting me at a lot of sites.
i.e. Like how a lot of end users act like the are “allergic” when it comes to RTFM?

We use it. I’ve migrated it to a new host since we first deployed it. It’s kind of complicated to deploy and get running. But it works well once it’s setup. We even have started using it things outside of ERP.

We used it and we liked it. But not sure if it works on Kinetic, you might want to check. It also is getting very little love and runs on old Tomcat (if I recall).

Maybe Adobe Captivate or Camtasia can build better documentation/videos & quizzes.

I use Camtasia, it’s fine. The real benefit of EKM was how it was actually integrated with Epicor. If they are not maintaining the integration for Kinetic, I would say it is not worth the money.

Yeah, it runs on Tomcat with a very specific version of Java.

I would agree. If Epicor stops supporting it we would probably move off of it.

Also does some nice Internationalization if you’re willing to put in the extra work. It’s a nice package for the price.

i was wondering why i had a tomcat server. we are digging though our set up trying to find the old content that was built but after a new install, EKM cants seem to find a workspace.

The one downside at least not to long ago is that they require you to use a Vulnerable and outdated Tomcat version because EKM if I recall still uses the same code from 2015. Maybe its fixed, but for anyone using EKM and runs into problems, leaving this here for reference

Epicor claims its fixed in Tomcat 8 but I had to use Tomcat 7.0.54 this was 3yrs ago. Not sure if they fixed it.

Basically EKM uses the " character in its URLs and Tomcat 7.0.54+ blocks that. Causes a 400 error

EKM 9.5 + Tomcat 8 = Success they say
I had EKM 9.2 + Tomcat 7.0.54 = Success

I have become a fan of Active Presenter. Has some of the EKM functions with teach, train, test mode. Exports all sorts of formats.

As of whenever I move our instance it still didn’t work with 8. Had to use 7.0.54 as you mention @hkeric.wci .

The setup was a bit of a pain, but I have found the software easy to work with and would recommend. I have been using EKM to catalog our processes for Production, MES, and a recent Maintenance Module implementation. Also, I use the tool to document other Epicor functions within our organization that I do not use regularly. Our MES Operator Guide was built on different EKM videos, which were converted to a Word Document.

We are trying to use EKM and am finding that when we click on the drop down arrows that EKM does not allow us to select anything. Is there a setting or something that can fix this>

Drop down arrows were?
