Hardware Question Server 2003 Memory

Again thanks to all with the /PAE advice and the boot.ini help. Server reboot over the weekend mae it take effect and "My Computer" properties screen now shows 8GB plus a note beneath that says "Physical Address Extension". Now I can go tune Vantage to try to utilize it as much as possible.
Thanks again,
-Todd C.

Hey Dan,

Microsoft has added a feature called Physical Address Extension (PAE) that will allow the 32 Bit Enterprise Edition of Windows Server 2003/2008 to utilize up to 64GB of RAM. Here are the instructions for enabling the feature:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc758228.aspx

This is great for people who want to utilize more system RAM without having to upgrade to 64 bit OS's.

Todd,

I don't have all the MS OS's memorized as to whether they are 32-bit or 64-bit, but I can tell you that if the MS OS you're using is only 32-bit, you will only ever see 4GB (max) RAM. Only when you're running x64 will you be able to detect more than 4GB RAM. Even some of our Dell workstations (on 32-bit XP) only report 3.5GB due to hardware overhead.

Sorry about the abbreviated response earlier-I got sidetracked.

One for the hardware gurus....
The discussion of server issues, memory and OS got me to looking at my setup and I've discovered a possible hardware failure on my Vantage 6.1 server. It is running Server 2003 R2 Enterprise and is supposed to have 8GB of RAM. Right clicking "My Computer" shows 3.25GB but I've seen this figure lie from time to time on other Windows systems. Running MSINFO32 shows physical memory of 3.32GB...so now I'm getting worried. Task Manager shows 3.4GB. When I pretend to want to change the virtual memory settings it recommends only 4.9GB.

So....it looks like Windows is not seeing 8GB and I may have a memory failure issue. I believe the system was configured as 4 X 2GB meaning one pair or bank is missing. If I recall the memory must be in pairs on a HP DL380 G5 so losing one module would disable the second in that bank so this makes some sense.

The questions I have are....
1) Is there a good reliable (and free) memory reporting tool that will show me the true physical memory? Or are the above indicators reliable enough?
2) Might there be a setting in Windows 2003 R2 Ent. that is throttling the memory at 4GB or so?
3) Would the dual physical CPUs have anything to do with memory reporting....such as each seeing a different 4GB?

If this is what I think it is I need to schedule downtime this weekend and also hit the vendor for a warranty replacement.

Even with 'Enterprise' edition, server will not 'see' memory above
3.5 Gb unles /pae switch is included in boot.ini file AFAIK

I do not know of a tool just for checking memory but I use NEWT Professional
by Komoto Laboratories which does a great job of both Hardware and Software
Inventory of both PCs and Servers. They have a Freeware version but I am not
sure what it exactly what it excludes versus the paid for version

in windows 2003 enterprise, there is a switch you have to add to boot.ini to make it see more than 4GB ram. ms has a kb article on it, you can search it at support.microsoft.com.

I usually go to www.crucial.com and run their memory scanner, shows what is installed, empty banks
and max memory for the system.Â

Thanks to all for the 4GB+ switch info and also Darren for the Crucial web site hardware scanner (very cool). The scanner shows 8GB in the 4X2GB config so it must be the /PAE switch. Not really happy that the VAR who configured the system did not know to set this or tell me to set it when the second 4GB arrived later after being backordered. Maybe the tech and the sales guy did not talk to each other about the final config.
Thanks again,

All 32 bit XP systems with 4GB of memory will report less than that because of hardware resources. I have never had an Enterprise Edition of Windows Server but from what I have read you must use the /PAE switch in the boot.ini file if you need to access more than 4 GB of memory. .

It is 32-bit Enterprise edition so should support up to 64GB although I believe the HP specs max out at 32GB (8 X 4GB modules) on the motherboard and BIOS.

I tried setting the /PAE switch last night but found accessing the boot.ini file is more difficult than expected. I could not seem to get an option for this in BOOTCFG and did not attempt to directly Notepad edit the file itself...yet. Because rebooting the Vantage server is so disruptive it will now wait for the weekend. In the mean time I am researching the need for and use of the /3GB switch and if that has any bearing on Vangate/Progress 9.1d being able to use more of the memory.

Thanks (and to Charles too),

Running MSINFO32 shows physical memory of 3.32GB...so now I'm getting worried. Task Manager shows 3.4GB. When I pretend to want to change the virtual memory settings it recommends only 4.9GB.

Todd,
Â
Here is how I edited my boot.ini
Â

loadTOCNode(2, 'summary');
To view and edit the Boot.ini file:

1.
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
-or- Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.

2.
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.

3.
Under System Startup, click Edit.

This is great for people who want to utilize more system RAM without having to upgrade to 64 bit OS’s.

Regards,

Michael
