How Many Data Coll Terminals?

Here is what we did. Look at each area on the plant floor. Determine how
many jobs get completed in that area and people doing jobs. If you have one
area with a lot of jobs and people you need at least 2 collection terminals
there.

Subject: [Vantage] How Many Data Coll Terminals?

Are there any guidelines or calculations to determine how many data
collection
terminals I should plan for on our shop floor? What do I base an estimate
on:
The number of employees in an area?
The square footage of the area?
The number of pieces of equipment?
An estimated number of transactions per employee?

You DC users out there, how many terminals do you have and
how did you figure out how many to get? If you had to do it all
over again what would you do differently?

We're getting some wiring done in our plant and while they're here
I want them to at least start running some wire through walls, etc.
in preparation for DC.

Marty,

We put stations in frequently traveled areas, back door to building, lunch
room, etc...
This was for clocking in and out.
We then put stations within a reasonable walking distance for each.
We then looked at each user if one user was running 6 machines which
translates to a lot of transaction we added a second station in that area or
gave them their own.

We cover 50-60 shop employees with 14 data collection stations.
Think in terms of you walk in the back door or lunch room to clock in, then
report production in your area.
Also if your production station is down where's the next closet one.
Also things change in the shop, if a line forms add a second station, be
flexible, if your pulling new lines, don't pull just one, plan for changes
or growth.

Over time we have created a couple of mini work areas with two data stations
and a SPC station in a clean controlled area.

Finally, be shop smart by putting the stations in well traveled areas but
away from environmental issues like grinders. And don't forget about fork
truck drives or material handlers give them plenty of space as well.

Marty, we have 3 plants with 7 data collection workstations. The
largest Plant has 3, with the other having 2 each. Most of our
operations can go on for a reasonably lengthy period of time. To me
that is anywhere from one hour to the entire shift. So for us, distance
from the data collection workstation wasn't a huge ordeal. Our
facilities aren't large. The depth of our largest plant is
approximately 300 feet. I have one located near the back of the plant,
one at the front (these are on the west aisle) and one to the east side
of the plant, mid location. A triangle shape. the longest distance to
the nearest terminal for any one work centre would be a maximum of about
50 feet. We are going to consider adding an additional workstations, to
cut down on the walking distance. But again, the longer the operations,
the less walking time required. The other two plants, employess can
access a DC workstation within 30 to 40 feet of any workcentre. The DC
is utilized by approximately 100 employees, and we haven't had too many
complaints.
