I could have had a V8...on Linux

John,

The server side of the application is OE10B which is pure Java and,
therefore, can run on linux, unix, windows, etc... The client side of V8 is
the only part that is written in .NET.

Michael

I was curious to see if anyone has implemented Vantage 8 on Linux and, if
so, what has been your experience with regards to support, performance,
etc..

Sorry for the late reply but I don't check this list very often.

We have been running V8 on Linux for over a year now. Can you guess
who we are? We are using Red Hat ES version of Linux. The
performance has been great. The database speed has never been an
issue. We switched from Windows to Linux because there is a
performance gain to be had from running Progress on the Linux
platform. We also have a sister company the runs a different ERP
system with a progress database on Linux so the switch wasn't a shock
to the IT department. Plus it didn't hurt that we got a new server
with two 2.8 ghz xeon processors and 15,000 rpm drives running raid 10.

There were some of the support people had to learn about Linux but in
reality the commands to control the Progress database are the same in
Linux as they are in Windows so there was no learning curve with
working with the DB. Epicor also has a new Linux server that is
pretty close to what we have for their testing. I know of one person
in the development group that was excited about our switch to Linux.

The only problem we have is Linux is case sensitive and some of the
programmers like to change the case of some files or their calls with
in programs. This is easily fixed by creating a symbolic link to the
file with the correct case until the actual problem can be fixed.

Over all I would say, If you have just a little Linux knowledge you
should not have any problems running V8 on this platform.

Now it is back to finishing up the 805 patch install.

The Vantage v8 code that executes on the server is all written in Progress
and therefore it could run on any platform that Progress supports. However,
I believe Epicor is currently only supporting Vantage v8 on Linux and
Windows. The Vantage v8 client code (the User Interface) is the part that
written in .Net.

Remember that 8.0 separated the client and the server. The client doesn't care
what the server is running on. It's just talking to the Progress App Server.

HOWEVER, you can run .Net apps on Linux and other Unix type operating systems
by using Mono. http://www.mono-project.com/Main_Page This group, sponsored by
Novell, wrote the Common Runtime Library for Unix-type systems. So you should
be able to run the client on Mac OS-X as well as Red Hat or SuSE Linux.

The down side is you still need windows clients, but it is a start.
