Installing Citrix ICA clients over WAN

Sarah
Try this. Go into the profile dir (on a win95 machine it is
c:\windows\profiles\username\ICA client) and edit the Appsrv.ini file.
Then under the published application name group, change the entry
'Address = pub app name' to the actual IP address of your server...

here is mine for example...

[Vantage IBM]
TransportDriver=TCP/IP
DesiredHRES=4294967295
DesiredVRES=4294967295
ScreenPercent=0
Description=Vantage IBM
Address=Vantage IBM <<<<<******** change this to the IP address of
your server********
InitialProgram=#Vantage IBM
IconPath=C:\PROGRAM FILES\CITRIX\ICA CLIENT\PN.EXE
IconIndex=1
ConnectType=1
MaximumCompression=Off
Compress=On
PersistentCacheEnabled=Off
MouseTimer=0
KeyboardTimer=0
AudioBandwidthLimit=1
UseDefaultSound=On
DefaultSoundType=1
UseDefaultEncryption=On
EncryptionLevel=1
UseDefaultWinColor=On
UseDefaultWinSize=Off
DesiredWinType=8
TWIMode=On
SavePNPassword=On
ICASOCKSProtocolVersion=-1
ICASOCKSProxyPortNumber=1080

I have had your problem before and this seemed to help. It has
something to do with the ICA browser not responding.

Another thing to try is to write a batch file called 'restartica.bat' on
the Citrix server as follows
=
net stop icabrowser
net start icabrowser
<eof>

The batch file seemed to work temporarily, but replacing the IP address
seemed to be permanent.

Thanks so much to everyone who responded to my questions two weeks
ago regarding Citrix w/terminal server. We made the decision to
purchase citrix and installed it last week. The server install went
easily. The local client installs went smoothly as well and I LOVED
the capabilities citrix gave over Terminal Server.

However, when I tried installing the ICA client on the remote
clients, I get the following error messages.

"The system can not log you on (52E). Please try again or consult
your system administrator."

"The application set can not be found on the network. It may be
offline, your computer may not have the protocol it needs, or your
computer may not be connected to the network."

The remote clients can still connect to terminal server with no
problems.

I have read the CITRIX administrator's guides for each the server
and the client installs, but I do not find them easy to understand.

If anybody had these problems and can help me figure out what i need
to do to set up the Citrix server for remote clients and to set up
the remote clients I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for your feedback!

Sarah
Here is my guess. If you recall when you log in for the first time on to a
Windows desktop it creates your own folders and icons. My guess is that the
profile is being created and the user doesn't have sufficient rights to
write to the registry or hard drive. The way I tested it was to log in as
myself with my admin account and I didn't get any error messages. To get
around it you may want to adjust your clients' rights sufficiently.

Hope this is correct and it helps.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your feedback. I don't think this can be the issue since we are
using the same user here at the local site and it is working fine here. I
think that we need to set something on the Citrix server to be able to
connect remote users via a T1 line, do you know if this is true?

Thanks!

Hi Sarah,

If I'm correct that you are having the problems with your remote locations try
this:

When using the Citrix ICA client you need to open a certain port on your
firewall (forget which one but I'm sure it's in one of the manuals) to allow for
the ICA traffic. We ran into this at Connor. You don't have this problem when
you're inside the firewall...just on the other side.

I agree, Citrix does some awesome stuff. We've been using it for 3 years with a
lot of success.

Hope I'm not to late on this issue....

When you set up the remote site PC, after installing the client,
go to the Citrix program neighborhood, click in the middle of the
window so that nothing is highlighted, and then click on the file menu.
In that menu, click on properties. Choose TCP/IP as your protocol
and then enter the address (or name) of your Citrix/Terminal Server.
If you have any questions about this, let me know. We had this same
problem when we first started.

Tim,

Thanks so much for responding, because I am still stuck on this. I
am sorry to write so much, but I want to try to explain exactly what
is happening here.

I still cannot connect directly to my Vantage published application
from the remote client. I can connect to a published application
fine from a local client. However, when I try to add a cutom ICA
connection from a client and I choose 'Published Application' (as
opposed to choosing 'Server') and I try to click the drop-down list
for a view of all apps to choose from, I get an error message "ICA
failed to return any names. Server addresses may be entered in the
server location list for this application, if no ICA servers exist on
your local subnet." If i just type in the name of the published
application 'Vantage' and continue, when I try to connect I receive
the error messsage that the server cannot be found.

If during the ICA custom connection set-up, i swith it to 'Server'
(as opposed to published application) and I type in our server
name 'nmvantage' and it worked fine tp connect to the server.
However, we need to connect directly to the published application and
not to the server.

Please, if you can think of anything to help me, I would really,
really appreciate it, I am so confused!

Thanks!

Tim,

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I have finally deciphered what you said in your

what you told me and it worked! I am so happy, you have saved me!
Thank You!!

Tim,

Did you continue to have problems on the remote clients? I set them
up like you said, and I added the custom connection for the published
application and it worked great. Then, I came back to it a half hour
later and tried opening the custom connection and I started getting
the error message again, and now I can't get it back! I am so
frustrated with Citrix right now, but I am sure (hoping) I am just
missing something. If you have any other ideas for me, I really
would appreciate them!

Thanks again!

Sarah
Sarah,

Once I got the machines setup, they have been pretty stable.
Were you logged in on this machine with a different user ID?
I've found that the settings are set by user. What I've had to
do is get one user configured correctly, go into their profile
directory and copy all of the ini files back to the location where
I installed the citrix program files. This way, the server information
is installed when each user starts the Citrix program.

What Operating system are you using on the Client?
What version of Citrix?
What software is used on the Server?
What version of the Citrix Client are you using?

Hopefully, I can help.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the response. Ok, here's my set-up. We have our citrix
server running only windows NT 4.0 terminal server edition, citrix
metaframe 1.8 for terminal server 4.0 and Vantage.

The clients connecting are all NT. All local clients connected
fine. On the remote side, we are connecting over a T1 line, TCP/IP
protocol. We can continue to connect thru terminal server without
issue.

Each PC has one machine ID, ex. 'MLEITEC' and the same user id to log
into terminal citrix and/or citrix 'mleitec'. We have one user per
PC.

On each client, after running the install I first went into the
properties for the custom connections and changed the network
protocol to TCP/IP, I left the 'server group' set to the default of
primary, and I added our citrix server IP address of '172.16.19.87'
to the address list. I then double-clicked 'add ICA Connection' and
chose 'WAN' as the connection type. Ont the second screen, when I
try to use the drop-down list to pick my application, I receive the
message that the 'ICA browser failed to return any names'. If I
change to 'server' and type in the server name or IP address
everything works and it connects to the citrix server desktop.

Only one computer has successfully connected to the vantage published
application. However, after rebooting the machine, that connection
directly to the published application failed to work as well. I then
connected directly to the IP address, whch worked, and then the
connection to the Published application came back. There has to be
something easier, right?

Thanks so much for replying,

Sarah

When it was originally setup, did you use a different
user ID (Like Administrator?) than the one that the PCs owner uses?

What version of the Citrix Client are you using?

In the Citrix Client, Are you using the Find Application Set,
or Add ICA Connection?

Did you add the application on the Terminal/Citrix Server using
the Published Application Manager? What scope are your
applications published in Domain or Server Farm? Is your server
a member of a server farm (even if it's the only one)?

I'll try to help the best I can,
