Internet Monitoring

You could use a firewall on your company network. Many of them offer
content filtering and blocking. They also offer a very intense log.
You can use these logs to better analyis your web usage. Some
reporting tools can make pie charts and graphs form these logs. I
use ISA Server a Microsoft product, but there are many other good
software packages.

Does anyone know of a software product that allows you to monitor computer
usage especially internet usage? I want to ensure that shop computers are
not being abused for non-company usage. Is this something that can be done
easily?

Dunno about general usage. But for Internet, there are several products on
the market. I've run some demo versions of Web Inspector from Elron
Software (elronsw.com) and wasn't overly impressed with it. It has a
serious flaw that can cause it to record erroneous site access information,
which makes it useless for enforcing a policy or any disciplinary use.

Peter,

There is a website, www.iopus.com, that has software called STARR. I have downloaded it to try but I haven't had the chance to test and implement it. From what I have noticed on the website it seems very user-friendly to setup and maintain.

Network Associates has a product called "Sniffer"
We're using Ethereal (www.ethereal.com) which is not as polished but
gets the job done.

I agree with using Surf Control. We have been using it for about a year
now and we block sites that are inappropriate for use on company
computers. Additionally, all I had to do was print out a couple of my
reports depicting who my high users were (and left them at the network
printer for others to pick up) and the amount of time went down by about
25% within the first month.

Email or call me offline and I will share with you what we do with it.
