Is the ANSWERBOOK website up?

The Answerbook is currently down. Our IS department in Irvine is looking
into the issue.

Good morning.

I was wondering what systems people are using to manage their IT
departments. Personally, I find a major need for software to track time &
costs for Support, Admin, Research & Projects.

I have developed a spreadsheet system which works, and gives me breakdowns
of times spent on each, but it's heavy on admin. I'm currently developing
an Access database to do this and more, including asset management and
costing, Project, Support, Research costing etc..

Does anybody else do anything similar? Or have you got a ready-made
software package? (I have considered Microsoft Project but I don't think it
will nail assets and support costs as well as it handles projects).

I'd be interested to hear how you work.

Anton,

We've got the same situation and are approaching it in the same manner. We
have home-grown Access programs for asset management, software license
tracking, and time keeping. The time keeping software functions a lot like
Data Collection.

If you want to save yourself some time on the costing / time-keeping side,
you could set up a job in Vantage and track time that way. We do this
occasionally to capture time on special projects. You just have to let your
accountants know, because these costs show up on the WIP report, and they'll
want to take that into consideration.

Can anyone advise me on the best way to get a cost report structured at
the sales order level? It seems everything I have reviewed is at the
"job" level. Typically, I would only want a summary report at the sales
order level, and then we could drill down at the job level if we need to
determine why we experience and anomalies.

Jim,

The "Sales Gross Margin" report does the costs by shipment, which I believe
is what you'd want. It will either show you the cost of the shipment based
on the job costs (if you ship from the job) or the cost stored in the part
master, be it average, standard, or last (if you ship from stock).

It shows the gross margin percentage, which would alert you to any
production anomalies.
