Job Suggestion verses Unfirm Job

Can someone tell me or point out a document that would tell me why a Job Suggestion would be created and not a Unfirm Job?

I only have a handful of suggested jobs in my system. In all cases it’s because there isn’t an approved method for the system to use.

EDIT: from the MRP Tech Reference:

Note that the tech ref isn’t quite correct. Even if a part has method (and only one method), it must be approved for the system to use it for unfirm jobs.

If you’re running MRP and logging is on for that process, you’ll likely see a message within the logs that tells you why a job was not created (this has always been the case in my experience). There can be many reasons. Also, any demand input since last MRP that requires a job (e.g. Make Direct Order Release), then you’ll see suggestions in real time before it has had an opportunity to create the job (obviously).

The most common cause for us lately has been making a part inactive while it is on the MOM. We find it through Method Tracker.

We’ve seen this happen if the “Approved” date on the method is after the need by date of the part. Also, if any material in the method has been put on hold in Part Maintenance.

You could try looking at the Planning Workbench - it will show the suggestions and may give you an indication of why it was a suggestion instead of an unfirm job.
