D-Link makes decent KVM switches that are priced rather competitively. I
use a d-link 4-port in my cubicle, so I can hook up a workstation, a test
server, and whatever user PC's I happen to be working on at the time. I'd
consider the D-Link to be a reliable product.
We use a Belkin 8-Port in our server rack, and have had no problems.

One last note on the Cybex unit. I hook and unhook computers form this box
all the time without shutting anything down. I usually live in the computer
room and do any computer builds/installs from an unused port on the Cybex.
I shut down the computer I am hooking up but nothing else.

Aaron -
Thanks for the tips. I'll try your technique. My only concern is the risk
of unplugging/plugging the cables into a power live box. On the first day I
installed my Belkin, I blew the board in it. Belkin replaced it for me
under warranty but thought it was because I was attaching cables while the
box was powered up.
So short of buying a new Cybex switch that others say has no problem like
this, I'll first try your workaround the next time it fails.

Bob, and others that have expressed this is an issue,
Sorry, I was away for the weekend, but I have found the solution to this.
We use a 4 port Belkin on our servers. I had this same keyboard mouse
lockup. The solution is this:
Remove the power cord (if you use it) totally, it uses power from the
computers anyway.
Now when the mouse and keyboard are locked up, unplug the keyboard and
mouse
from the KVM (not the KVM to the computers). Now plug them back in and
move
the mouse and tap cap locks twice on the keyboard (just to be sure the
lights agree). Now right click the mouse and then click outside the
pop-up
(it gets confused with click and right click until you do this). This
works
every time for ours. Sometimes one specific machine will still have a
problem. The answer is to switch to that computer and perform the
operation
above again. You should find functionality comes back. I can't count the
number of times I used VNC to operate my servers before I figured this
out.
Please let me know if I am the only one this works for. If not, maybe we
should clue in Belkin. :)
Good luck,
Aaron Hoyt

I have a UNIX SCO server along with my Vantage PC workstation running
WIN98
2nd Edition. Have used Belkin KVM switch for about 3 years, even before
Vantage install. Great space saving tool!
BUT, periodically through day, my cursor and keyboard on PC lockup and
only
recovery is restart. Belkin says that can happen! No fix? My UNIX
machine
never fails, by the way.
