Hi,

We are looking to purchase a label printer for purchase receipts. I was
wondering if anybody could offer advice on this one. The labels will be
of standard size. Has anybody got any advice on the actual printing
tags process, is it good or bad?

TIA
We tried using Zebra printers at first but had too many issues with
the drivers - after several frustrating calls to Epicor and Zebra we
finally switched over to Intermec and have not had any problems (10
printers in service and over 10,000 labels so far). We use them for PO
receipts and also for shop material tags. Some key items:
We had to do a lot of customization to get the receipt labels to print
info we wanted.
We did some modification to the shop tags also but not quite as bad.
THERE CURRENTLY IS NO WAY TO PRINT A MATERIAL TAG FROM THE 'ISSUE
MATERIAL' SCREEN -VERY FRUSTRATING AS WE PULL A LOT OF PARTS FROM
STOCK (STILL WORKING WITH EPICOR ON POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS).
There are still bugs with receipts that either need inspection, or are
for subcontract - the NEXT OP info is not correct. The subcontract
receipt operations reference themselves instead of next op, and the
inspection receipts do not reference any op.

Thanks for the reply, would it be possible to know the model of the
Intermec.

TIA

Having previewed Rich J.'s response I would add the following....

We have several Zebra Z4M label printers (4X6 Direct Thermal labels) and they have been rock solid. Yes we had some initial driver issues years ago with the first one....ended up the printer rev level indicated in the driver must NOT match the one shown on the printer. Zebra support, after we found the right person, was able to give us the rev level number to use that made everything work OK. Later driver installs are far more automatic and resolved this. The Z4M would handle any label with 4" in one of the dimensions. The Intermec printers I have used were fine too....just a lot more expensive.

We treat the printers the same as a laser printer for purposes of printing labels from Report Builder or Crystal. No special programming required. For bar codes the standard Dataworks 39 font that comes with Vantage is just fine. Put a * at the start and end of the field. Any Vantage based Crystal report would already have a BCxxxxx version of field names to be printed in barcode format that have the *s embedded already. Unfortunately we do not print inventory tags so I can't be specific on that process. If I recall correctly Aaron Hoyt has been using a BAM on some sort of receipts to trigger printing labels that sounded really slick.

We originally tried Zebra S4M printers and ended up using Intermec
PD41. We use 3x5 labels here.
How many labels do you look to print? This would determine the printer.
Most of the smaller Zebra printers (like the 2844 series) have a roll of
250 labels (4x6) where as the Z series handles 2500 or more. Of course,
the size of the printer determines price, but the larger printer will be
more cost effective if you print a large number of labels.

The other issue would be that you would then not be limited to just PO
receipts but you can also use them for inventory, shipping and other
reasons. Don't just think about now, but include down the road in your
plan.

Hi,

The number of labels will be relatively low. In terms of using it for
other activities then that would be limited too. We don't ship
anything to customers or subcontractors. But we may be able to use it
in the build process.

Just looking for a quick solution but maybe the actual crystal report
could be a problem.

Thanks

Since we are on the label topic, does anyone use labels on steel and if
so does it stick well?

(WHOOPS)
We tested a vinyl-based label for outdoor use and it held up very
well to chemicals and sunlight. Attaching it to steel proved very
effective as long as you don't mind grinding it off (it doesn't just
pull up). We don't do that anymore-we just use hang tags or peel of
a small corner of the sticker when attaching to raw steel.
