Labor Claiming/Clocking and Accuracy

* I want to solicit the group to see how others handle accuracy of
employee job claiming, as well as what you are requiring for job
clocking

* ...

We have all employees clock into the building (for payroll) and into all
jobs (for job costing etc). This includes all job operations and major
setup time (tooling changes), and all indirect work (in just general
categories). Our BOM detail depends on the type of work... one 5 person
continuous process is a single operation, while another process is split
into a dozen operations - the determining factor is whether we can let
parts pile up between operations. We treat errors as something to find
& fix later, both in Vantage and by training/whatever the employee
(started on Vantage 6.1, so no BPMs/customizations... we might change
this long term).

We use several custom reports to assist with labour accuracy:

- barcode on the traveler, so workers are scanning (not typing)
job numbers

- daily labour activity, for supervisors to review yesterday's
activity (and fix problems if needed)

- a couple exception reports built into that daily labour report
(eg, an employee that clocked into the building but didn't clock into a
job)

- monthly summaries of direct vs indirect, %clock-in ratios,
used by plant managers & senior management

- worked time vs production standards calculations, used by
plant managers

- export to non-Vantage payroll system, with a couple
review/exception reports used by payroll clerk

These are SSRS reports customized for our plant & operation structure
with some hardcoded bits that make them not very useful to share as-is,
but I'll pull pieces of those calculations out if helpful for you.

Contact me off-line if you'd like more details on any of this.

Subject: [Vantage] Labor Claiming/Clocking and Accuracy

I want to solicit the group to see how others handle accuracy of
employee job claiming, as well as what you are requiring for job
clocking.

My goal is to get as much useful information from the system with the
least amount of effort/requirements. Obviously requiring clocking on
every operation gives detail, but it requires a lot of labor from the
employees unless using some type of backflush or automation.

1) Do you use any custom reports/dashboards/BAQs to get visibility into
accuracy?

a. If so, what are you doing today and what is your process?

i. Example: Do you have a variance report to compare what was claimed
verse what the job called for? Who looks at this report or
verifies/signs off? What is the process?

b. Can you provide to the group your report/dashboard/BAQ that is used?

c. Are you using any BPMs or Customizations to force business logic and
if so what logic are you enforcing?

i. Example: Do you allow an operation to be over/under claimed or send
an alert if such logic exists?

2) Clocking of operations.

a. How do you handle clocking of setup and is it required on every op?

b. How do you handle clocking of production and is it required on every
op?

c. How detailed are your BOMs?

i. Is there an operation for every level where a part is touched?

1. You may have a welding department, do you require only 1 op for
welding to clock into or do you provide detail/multiple levels for
everything a welder may do?

2. Example: A welder may weld a tube to a rod. Do you have an op for the
tube weldment and an op for the rod weldment of just a general welding
op?

3. If you use a more generic op (do not have detailed levels) how does
this affect the quality of information you get from the system?
(Thinking of measurement of scrap, performance, etc...)

d. Are you doing any type of backflushing?

i. Describe your process if using backflushing as it relates to the
accuracy of claiming.

ii. Any special tools used?
