Materials with Various Specs

We receive materials in under the same part number, even when the material is to different specs. We assign a lot number to keep track of the specs that each material is certified to. We want to make sure that our parts are compatible with MRP and suggestions. We want MRP to be able to pick the right material if it is in stock, or create a PO suggestion for the right material if it is not in stock. Most of the time the right material will not be stocked and we plan to order it for the job.

I think we need to create revisions for the main part number based on the various specs it can be certified to. For example we order 1" diameter round bar stock in stainless steel. Lets say our part number is SS1D. This material can be ordered to ASM1234, or AMS5678 as the specification. The material can be certified for either or both specs.

How would you keep these separate? The problem I see is that even if we assign asm1234 to revision A, there is nothing in the MOM that requires the rev A of that material. I think we would have to modify each MOM to make sure it points to the material at the correct rev to ensure it uses the right spec.

What do you think? Is there something in Epicor that already does this for me? How have other industries solved this problem?
Thank you for your time!

You can use AUOM to do this.

But, we have had this conversation before and you are playing with fire by not having separate part numbers if you want to use MRP. You are relying too much on humans to understand a convoluted process and apply it correctly under pressure.
