MES touchscreen monitors

In my previous life I never did get the touch screens implemented. I can tell you though, as many have said, I couldn't get people away from the keyboard and mouse.

I had a barcode card reader, barcode gun reader and barcode sheets (Resource Groups, Resources, Numbers, Letters...you name it I probably had it) neatly mounted to the side of the computer inclosure. Oh, even label printers. Everyone complained about how long things took to process, yet they wouldn't scan a barcode and would rather scroll and peck.

Here, we haven't went this direction yet but I am going to save this thread for future reference.

We went with ELO and haven't had any problems in 4 years.

Truthfully, we hate them. The screen must be constantly recalibrated, and using a finger for things like click-drag to highlight text, or clicking on a combo box drop down, or tapping in to a box and trying to position a cursor at a particular point... very frustrating for guys on the shop floor.
We gave up and put mouse/keyboard on each of them.
Plus, consider the cost. The touchscreens are roughly 3 to 4 times the cost of equivalent PC. At the time we bought them 3 yrs ago, they were over $2,000.
Hope that input helps at all.

We had the Dell (3M) units for years, but now use the Planar models that work much better and are more stable without need for calibration as mentioned.

I agree with Tony. As much as one would think the users would like the touchscreens, I’ve found that the shop floor employees find them cumbersome. They prefer the mouse and keyboard. You can buy two nice desktop PC’s for the price of one touchscreen all-in-one POS-style PC.

We are in the process of deciding whether to use touch or not. Initially, we thought it would be a no brainier and touch would be the way to go. Now I am reconsidering that position. Is is possible to create a poll on this forum to see what the group thinks overall?

IMO, I would suggest you poll your production / shop floor employees. They’re the ones who will be using them. Not sure if you have a touchscreen already in-house, but if you do, temporarily set it up on the shop floor so they can use it for a week.

My touchscreens lasted about 1-week until I had to connect a mouse (I always had a keyboard attached... the on-screen keyboard is horrible).

We're kind of in the same boat on trying to decide which way to go. My thought's on it are. People break things, especially things that are not theirs and we have fork trucks driving around where the stations will be. Should a touchscreen monitor break cost to replace is much greater (especially if it's all in one) if it's a regular monitor maybe 70 bucks and were back in business and I will have cold swaps available. Our solution is to use bar code scanners for the majority of the work with customized tab indexes to fit our flow, a mouse to navigate, and a usb 10-key for any numerical entries they need to perform. This keeps the amount of keyboard keys to a minimum that they need to interact with while keeping cost down and reliability up :)

Tim,
If you have no touchscreen available, try pulling up a web form on someone's iphone or droid (any touchscreen phone with Internet could work) and see how people like dropping down a combo box, tapping in to a text box and trying to drag cursor to highlight text, etc. It will at least give an idea.

I'm going to be bet, if given a choice, the shop guys will automatically pick the keyboard mouse route. They are very much creatures of habit and need persuading to use something new. If that something new isn't obviously better, they will resist. My plan now is to just ask everyone's opinion and go with the majority. That way, at least we have buy in with everyone.

I don't know about the MES screens since we are using the Labor Collector and Gateway modules from Vantage 6.1 and it takes less than 10 seconds to clock in or out of jobs with the touch screen (much faster than using a keyboard and mouse). We originally had CRT touch screens on the shop floor but as they have become harder to find, they've been replaced now with LCD ones. I was a little concerned with the light weight of the LCD being knocked over with a user's heavy touch, but that hasn't happened so far.

We are in the process of deciding whether to use touch or not. Initially, we thought it would be a no brainier and touch would be the way to go. Now I am reconsidering that position. Is is possible to create a poll on this forum to see what the group thinks overall?

That’s a good deal but it’s not a touchscreen, too, is it?
